Many thanks to Lager for bringing that essay to us.
I would grant that the Dems have overplayed their hand on social issues, and have a bit of rust coating their ideology. They also overestimate the popularity of their own positions. For instance, I think that they misunderstood the meaning of the increased support for same sex marriage legality. The Dems saw it as part of a great wave of support for the entire progressive agenda. I saw the emergence of a who am I to judge, live and let live philosophy, and nothing more.
I would say that, if the GOP is the Big Tent party, they should start bringing that tent to the national elections.
Those twelve or so candidates for the most part all sit on a very narrow sliver of the ideological spectrum. I mean, on guns, religion, science, etc there is a stifling orthodoxy. It was so bad that Scott Walker froze like a deer in the headlights when asked a question a high school student could answer about evolution.
On the state level you do see more pragmatism from republicans, and voters like that.
But, they don't apply that nationally.
Consider this; the GOP is happy to crow about winning the Governor's Mansion in liberal Massachusetts.
But, if Charlie Baker ever ran for president, he would be condemned as a "RINO" by the talking heads of his own team!
So much for the Big Tent
I suggest that every republican take a solemn vow to never use the term RINO again.

I think both parties spend too much time fussing over social issues. Sure, social issues can be hot button issues, but in the end, social and cultural issues tend to work themselves out over time as society evolves.
Case in point: Although I haven't followed the 'bathroom' fuss in Houston very closely, I'm seeing the whole thing plastered all over the place in the media. I found the whole thing to be rather amusing and sad. Anyone who has traveled to Europe is well aware that many (if not most) public and private facilities are unisex. For some reason, it doesn't to seem to be a big deal over there ........... you walk into a bathroom, there are one or two sinks, there might be one or two stalls behind another door or two, and they may or may not be marked 'men' or 'women'. I gotta be honest, I never gave it another thought. Isn't it crazy how stuff like 'who's using the bathroom' gets the vote out.
