Oktoberfest & other seasonal brews

Had another great beer tasting session with my best friends last evening.   We sampled Oktoberfest brews, hard ciders, and a few other.   The more plusses the better, IMHO.

Sierra Nevada    Oktoberfest
Harpoon    Oktoberfest
Goose Island    Oktoberfest +
Warsteiner    Dunkel    +
Ayinger    Dunkel
Pizza Boy    Maw River ++
Samuel Smith    Taddy Porter ++
DuClaw    Sweet Baby Jesus +    “Resse’s cup in a bottle”
Southern Tier    PumKing +
Deschutes    Imperial Pumpkin ++
Doc’s    Hard Cider
WoodChuck    Hard Cider
Original Sin    Hard Cider -
Crispin Cider    Crisp    “very tart”
Buddy Boy    Hard Ass Cider ++
Troeg’s    Hop Knife
Oskar Blues    G’Knight +++

The Oscar Blues is a double IPA, wonderfully smooth finish and the perfect end to a festive evening.

Re: Oktoberfest & other seasonal brews

Thanks for the reviews.
You really see some interesting brews this time of year.
Gonna sample that IPA this weekend.
Imagining it with a pork roast & apples.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Pork slow cooked with caramelized onions and apples and G'Knight....a feast fit for a king.

Re: Oktoberfest & other seasonal brews

Had a pumpkin beer last night that I can recommend --

Southern Tier Imperial Pumpkin Stoudt

Be warned, it clocks in at a healthy 10% ABV, but it's surprisingly smooth for a beer with that much alcohol content. Very pumpkiny, sweet and chocloatey.

Edit to add: Since I'm thinking about it, and since I didn't see it on Tarnation's list, a really good Marzen/Oktoberfest style beer I can recommend is Victory Brewing's Festbier.

This is a perfect beer for Victory as they brew exclusively in the German style. Very fresh. Good malt flavor with just the right amount of hops for someone who doesn't like excessively sweet Oktoberfest style beers.

At 5.2% ABV, you can have a couple and not fall out of your chair. A good campfire in your backyard beer for a cool fall night.
