Instead of telling them "God never gives you more than you can handle",,,
Ask, "What can I do to help".
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Sadly, all of the golden eggs that goose has laid this year went into a resurfacing project of the driveway.

Years ago I was having Mother-In-Law problems and I was complaining to what I considered a friend of many years. She told me very much the same rote phrase. It seemed so Oprah-like, snooty and impersonal. It didn't set well with me. I wanted to slap her. I still remember that and the bad feelings it caused. I don't think I ever confided in that person again.
