Interesting Contrast

Pope Francis opposes President Obama's views on abortion and same sex marriage. Yet Obama will enthusiastically meet with the Pope, and extend him every courtesy.

Pope Francis will arrive at a military base outside the capital on Tuesday afternoon to open his first visit to the United States, and President Obama will be there to welcome him. It is a gesture the president has extended to virtually no other foreign visitor.
(This) comes at a moment of sharp focus on moral questions where the two differ. For conservatives assailing the jailing of a clerk who refused to issue marriage certificates to same-sex couples and for abortion foes now mounting a bid to cut off federal money for Planned Parenthood, Francis and the teachings of the church offer a timely boost.

And Pope Francis's views on climate change are in stark contrast to conservative republicans, like Paul Gozar (AZ).

Gosar will boycott the Pope's address and go off somewhere to sulk.

Now, I don't know about you, but I believe that a requirement for being a leader is that you keep an open mind, and that you have the courage to listen to something you may not want to hear. You should at least have the good manners to be courteous to the spritual leader of the Catholic Church's 1.2 billion people.

Re: Interesting Contrast

Somehow Nancy Pelosi has found the courage to sit there and  risk being told something she doesn't like about abortion.

Re: Interesting Contrast

I sometimes wonder if stuff like this is simply tied to fundraising.

Each of these Congresspeople on both sides of the aisle are expected by leadership not only to fund their own reelections, but to make sure they get enough raised to contribute some to the national party, congressional campaign coffers, etc.

So imagine you are a congressman and you are beind on your fundraising goals. Boehner's people are up your ass as I'm sure Reince Priebus is as well. What better way to raise a few quick bucks than to say you're not going to the Pope's speech, get your name spashed across the internet, do a few quick spots on Fox, and then hope like hell some outside thanks you for your "courage" for standing up to the Pope by dropping some money into your PAC.

I could totally see that being the reality of the situation.
