Here's the other part of this story that doesn't make sense:
During my time as an educator, we had a couple of bomb threats. As soon as this happened, the principal evacuated the school, police were called, bomb sniffing dogs were set loose in the hallways, a team of professionals showed up to de-activate a bomb if it were found, etc.
Ok, so in this case, the teacher put the 'bomb' in his/her desk drawer before it was taken to the principal's office, the school wasn't evacuated, and gee there wasn't any indication of an explosive substance in the damn thing. So, if you really thought this thing was a bomb of some kind, you'd put it in a desk drawer and not evacuate the school?

They knew it wasn't a bomb.
Abysmal behavior by all.
According to Ahmed, he was enterrogated by police for over an hour without being provided with access to an attorney, or his parents.
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

With all the publicized missteps by police departments all over America one would have expected the local cops to be much more selective in handling this case.
