The Next Silly Stunt

Republicans are threatening to shut down the entire US government over funding for planned parenthood.
The federal Budget is about $ 3.8 Trillion for 2015.
Fedral spending on Planned parenthood accounts for $ 500 million.
That amounts to about 0.01% of federal spending.

What a silly, stupid, pointless stunt.

With Possible Shutdown Nearing, Obama Looks to Take Budget Fight to G.O.P.
By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN and JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS
SEPT. 16, 2015

WASHINGTON — Congress hurtled toward a government shutdown on Tuesday, with Republicans threatening to block a budget deal if it includes financing for Planned Parenthood, as President Obama prepared to join the fight by pushing Republicans to scrap a multibillion-dollar tax advantage for private equity managers.

In a speech on Wednesday, Mr. Obama is expected to call on Republicans to end the tax break and use the funds to pay for spending increases on domestic and national security programs, and he will enlist business leaders to help him make his case.

In a session at the Business Roundtable in Washington, Mr. Obama will seek to shame Republicans who control Congress for failing to strike a deal with Democrats to fund the government’s operations, using the so-called carried-interest provision as an example of what he argues are misplaced priorities, according to White House officials.

The tax break is one that the president has repeatedly proposed eliminating, and it is a favorite bête noire of Democrats condemning income inequality. Its repeal has little chance of passing a divided Congress, but it has gained new political potency in recent days, with two Republican presidential candidates, Donald J. Trump and Jeb Bush, endorsing it.

Re: The Next Silly Stunt

I am amazed at these Repubicans.  What fantasy world do they live in where they think todays young women would meekly step back in time and live like it was the past century with no Planned Parenthood, no health care, contraceptive or abortion services if needed?  Do they really expect todays women to push out a baby every year like their grandmother's did?  It isn't going to happen   And where are they getting this idea that if they'd do what they want to do there would be no repercussions from the voters?  They are seriously deluded and have fallen into the trap of believing their own spin,  In this digital, high-tech age with i-phones, satelites, mind blowing medical advances etc.  people are not going to go backwards.  Maybe the Republicans should get a new base.

I completely agree with you, Florentine.

I would also add this: if anybody wishes to defund PP, let them go before the American People and make their case. Let them acquire the votes in congress to do it. Don't try backdoor tricks like shutting down the government.
How would conservatives feel if we shut down the government to force new gun laws on them?
