What Do you Expect Tonight?

I'm actually not expecting much more than bombs thrown at Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and maybe a couple of 'socialist' comments about Bernie Sanders.

Might be entertaining at some level, but I'm not expecting alot of substance.  I get the feeling the whole thing is going to seem a bit canned, predictable, and staged since the Fox wing of the Republican party is running the show.  It will be more about D-Tribe bashing than R-Tribe promotion.

I hope Trump doesn't play the game so it becomes interesting and entertaining.

When the dust settles and this whole primary thing is over, the RNC machinery will pick the candidate and convince you that's the guy you wanted to beat those rascally Democrats in a general election.

What are you expecting tonight?

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

1.Demonizing Clinton.
2. Demonizing Obama.
3. Competing to see who sounds toughest against immigrants.
4. Trashing the Iran deal as the end of the world.
5. Some blather about "Taking our country back."
6. NO detailed solutions to any problem.

I do not expect that anybody is going to tear into Trump. That's playing his game. Don't give him the oxygen.
I think that the smart money is to appear steady, reassuring, and informed, and let Trump be revealed by his own one-liner understanding of the issues.

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

A bunch of people trying not to stick one or two feet in their mouths while attempting to deliver some memorable one line zinger in opposition to Hillary (Benghazi, her e-mails, the Clinton Foundation), Obama (the lousy Iran deal, "Obamacare", securing the border, IRS investigation of conservatives), Bernie Sanders (he's a socialist - nuff said), while attempting to appear strong and "presidential" by touting one or two of their momentous personal accomplishments. Blah, blah, blah . . .

I foresee something like "Last Comic Standing".

It would indeed be interesting if one of these bozos attacked Trump . . . just to see what kind of free-for-all would ensue and how the crack team of Fox "news" moderators would handle the resulting melee.

I'm sure Fox, with their incessant lead up to these "showcases", that they prefer to call debates, will be showing highlights of the world class big top event up until the actual 2016 election in case you miss it tonight.

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

Actually, I thought Fox did a decent job with asking questions, even though the answers may have been evasive by the candidates.  That's what politicians do when they get squirmy.  All in all, I would say of the 10 people on stage, Kasich seemed the most reasonable to me.

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

One other item--why were these silly-ass theatrics held in a venue that allowed thousands of people to cheer and boo like they were sitting watching an interactive and very bad movie?

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

I thought the debate was from the "git-go" only a process to answer the preordained questions that the panelists wanted answered. In general I thought that the format was horrible. I much would have preferred just opening up specific topics (ie the economy, immigration, religious freedom, etc) and just letting each take a crack at what their opinions were concerning each and what they would do to change anything in that regards IF they were to become President.

Too much of it seemed like just a presenter agenda driven back and forth.

There were a few contenders that overall I liked last night - Bush, Kasich, and Christie (no particular order). Most of the others left me wanting in either their responses or their demeanors.

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

I'll give Fox credit for putting together some decent questions. I actually felt like I learned nothing in this debate, which I guess is to be expected since for a lot of people this is their first time tuning into the candidates so from that perspective, it would make sense they would stick with their presure tested answers.

But, just for fun, here's my thoughts on how the candidates performed last night.....

Christie - His battle with Rand was the highlight of the night for me. Had an everyman quality I thought. Quitely did better than I thought he would have.

Carson - His voice, tone, and speaking cadence is so weird to me and he's hard to listen to. Seemed ingnored by Fox most of the night. Like his, "Why don't you talk about race? Because I'm a neurosurgeon." line. Had a good closing remark.

Walker - Not ready for prime time. For his supporters, his performance had to be a disappointment.

Rubio - Sometime, when I have an spare hour, I'm going to write a long post on why I like Marco Rubio and would seriously consider voting for him for President. In my opinion, the class of the field last night.

Trump - Brought the fire and the laughs. Is a total assclown and should not be allowed to participate in future debates.

Jeb! - Diligent performance. Didn't hurt himself, which is all he can hope for at this point in the race.

Huckabee - Get this guy off the stage. Lousy performance, no vision. Carly Fiorina should have been on the stage instead of him

Rand - Mixed review. He seemed angry, which isn't a good persona for him. But I'm down with his answers on the 4th amendment and a limited role in the middle east.

Cruz - I can't explain it but everything about Ted Cruz makes my blood boil. His positions, his voice, even his goofy Grandpa Munster face. I hope he's knocked out of this thing early.

Kasich - Most substantial and thoughtful answers of anyone on the stage. Due to this flaw in his campaign style, conservatives will run him out of the race soon (probably)

I think you're going to see a lot of different United States of America over the next three, four, or eight years. - President Donald J. Trump

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

I mostly agree with you, Lager.
I liked Christie, and Kasich's performaces.
Cruz has all of the appeal of a large reptile.
Huckaboo needs to get out of the race. Just a nasty man.

I must say that the appeal of Rubio eludes me.

And Trump?
I hear that he just called the moderator a "bimbo" in a tweet today. Real Presidential.

Re: What Do you Expect Tonight?

I mostly agree with The LagerLad also.  I like Ben Carson though, he seems like a well reasoned, calm and cool guy to me.  I certainly agree on Ted Cruz.  I can't stand Ted Cruz.  Something about that guy just rubs me the wrong way, even putting political views aside, he just looks like and comes across as a person that I would not like if I knew him personally.

Also, I think Trump should stay in the debates just for the comedy relief.  These things are usually really boring, but there's that factor of 'what will Donald Trump say next?' that keeps it interesting and entertaining.
