I don't Get It

I don't get the appeal of Donald Trump.

Not exactly a secret. But, I'm not at a loss for why Donald Trump does not appeal to me. Got that all figured out.

What I don't get is this:

Mr. Trump is performing best among voters who consider themselves to be “very conservative”

In New Hampshire Poll, Donald Trump Surges
http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/07/28/in-new-hampshire-poll-donald-trump-surges-despite-remarks-on-john-mccain/?ref=politics

"Very conservative".

Doesn't that mean you revere military service?
       Trump trashed McCain's service record
Trump never served a day in the miltary.

You revere family values.
Trump has been married three times.

You are against Obamacare.
     Trump has supported iniversal healthcare.

You are pro-life.
Trump was pro-choice a few years ago.

You support conservative candidates.
Trump has been giving Hillary Clinton money since 2002.

You support the invasion of Iraq, and feel that Obama withdrew too early..
Trump says "I would have never been in Iraq".

You like people who "speak the Truth".
Trump has made statements on Obama's religion and bith certificate that he never supported with evidence.
Trump made statements about immigrants and the government of Mexico that are contradicted by the available data.

You don't like people who "flipflop.
   See above.

Now, without judging Trump, I'm asking why conservatives love this man so much.
Is it entirely irrational?

Re: I don't Get It

Maybe they meant to say people who are very brainwashed and can't be bother to question anything?

I find Trump's appeal curious too.  I mean in general.

He has no sense of humor.  He has no sense of style.  He has absolutely no class at all.

I remember seeing something on televison where he was pointing out things in a bathroom and said "Looka that, solid gold, now thats class."

I would have loved to see the faces of some of the 'old money' people.

They probably got a really good laugh.

Re: I don't Get It

I'm just guessing here, Goose, but maybe many people who think of themselves as 'very conservative' don't really know what 'conservative' means.  They like people who tell them 'government is the problem, not the solution'.  The weird part for me is they then vote for the guy to run the government who told from the start that government sucks.

It's like saying, "Government doesn't work.  Vote for me and I'll prove it to you."

We have that here in the 28th PA Senate district.

Re: I don't Get It

Good posts.
I'm just scratching my head that the most conservative part of the electorate loves the guy with the most tenuous conservative credentials.

I think that Fred is right. Trump has tapped into the anger, the government doesn't work, I have no voice, the country is changing angst.

Makes a pretty good case for the idea that people don't think very clearly when they are angry.

Re: I don't Get It

Would also keep fear in mind.
Trump has raised the spectre of the Mexican government forcing millions of brown-skinned criminals over our border in a flood that is destroying our country and our "broken government" will not handle.

Trump thus joins a group of politicians exploiting nativism for their benefit that goes back at least to the 1850s.

Re: I don't Get It

Trump has seen some success early in his campaign assigning blame through channeling anger and fear in a small sector of the electorate. Thus far he has been unable or unwilling to suggest any viable solutions to any of the complaints he has leveled at anyone or anything who presents an opposing point of view. His mode of operations seems to hinge solely on personal attacks that originate from thoughtless outbursts resulting from his personal knee jerk reactions to people or issues.

Sooner or later, one would hope, this P.T. Barnum circus barker approach to campaigning will fall flat on its face. One has to wonder what his excuse will be for his ultimate epic failure.

Correct, and history is littered with people who became dictators and rose to power using the same technique.
