The myth? That the right is somehow more patriotic, or more respectful of military service than those darn liberals.
I've watched years and years as the right flew into a rage at some imagined slight that a democratic President supposedly offered to military service. He played golf on Memorial day Weekend (Not Memorial day itself, but the weekend), his salute to the ceromonial guard on Marine One was too casual. He played golf after a somber event or catastrophe, He never served,,,yada yada yada.
Oh the outrage!
Miltary service is to be revered no matter what your politics are. (Well, unless you are dissing John Kerry's war record.)
Yep, respect for military service goes beyond politics.
Well, maybe not.
McCain Who? Vets Slobber Over Trump
Think all vets care about the draft-dodging CEO’s tough talk about McCain’s war record? They don’t.
It’s hard to think of a worse place than Sun City, South Carolina, for Donald Trump to make his first public appearance since unleashing a firestorm of controversy by calling Sen. John McCain “not a war hero” over the weekend.
The “active” retirement community of 16,000 is a magnet for military retirees, many of whom served in Vietnam as McCain languished in a Hanoi POW camp and is a a mandatory stop for “country-first” Republicans looking to win the state’s crucial First-in-the-South primary.
But instead of greeting Trump with protests for his comments, the conservative crowd of 600 welcomed the GOP frontrunner with three standing ovations, an overflow room of 500, and rapt attention.
Can you imagine how this community would have greeted Hillary Clinton if she had ridiculed John McCain's service?
So, going forward, let's resolve to be honest.
Honestly,,,, politics trumps everything in our society.
And the demand for respect of military service is no exception. In fact, The requirement for respect for military service is entirely situational. If it fits with your political agenda, you will get all choked up about a man's bravery. And you'll fly into a rage if a politician (one that you don't like, that is) doesn't meet a very, very high expectation of proper reverence.
But, if you like the guy, trashing another man's military service just isn't an issue at all. In fact, in the case of John Kerry and the swift-boaters, you'll participate in the trashing.
And, That's the way it is. So get off your high horses.

It was very low class to say what Trump did about our war heroes and service people . Just as bad as what the Swiftboaters did. It is beyond disgusting when you tear down your service people like that.
I think Trump gets away with what he says and does because he lashes out and gets so low down dirty and nasty publically to people who anger him. People hesitate to confront someone like that. Politicians will smile and act nonchalant like John McCain did over the weekend, but will really beseething with anger and will stick it to their opponents behind the scenes. Trump will be in your face, screaming, demanding everyone look at you and he'll even give out your own person phone number. Can you imagine anyone doing that?? He will publically humiliate you, sneer and walk away. Who wants that in their face? No one seems to know how to deal with him not even when he says despicable things about our military people. The Repubs are letting him get away with these outrageous antics because they don't want to confront him, anger him and have him run as an independent. That would be a Hillary win for sure. My, my, my. Aren't they in a quandary.....
