York County mosquito sample tests

Only one sample came back positive for West Nile!
And that was from Springettsbury Township.
You should wear insect repellent, especially if they're outside at night.

Last year there were 80 positive tests.

Of the nearly 500 mosquito samples tested so far this year in Pennsylvania, only one came back positive for the West Nile Virus, results for the virus's 2015 control program show. That sample was taken from Springettsbury Township last Friday, May 22.One other positive result this year in Pennsylvania came from Centre County where an avian sample proved positive, data from the state's West Nile Virus Control Program shows.

In that same county, nine of a total of 155 collected mosquito samples were tested with no positive results."We're trying to get an idea of what's going on across the county," said Tom Smith, the program's director at Penn State extension in York. "Our goal is to reduce human contagion."York County had the highest number of collected mosquito samples of any other county in the state. Of 473 samples, 44 were tested with the one positive.

According to the program's website, a mosquito sample can include either larval or adults. Only adult mosquitoes are tested for West Nile Virus.Smith and a couple other staffers with the West Nile Control Program will return to Springettsbury Township on Monday, Smith said, and conduct what he deems "advanced surveillance." They'll be on the lookout for places mosquitoes breed and take note of any area that have stagnant water, a common environment mosquitoes breed.

In the meantime, as hot temperatures continue to hit York County, Smith encourages residents to cleanup their backyards, and get rid of stagnant water.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”
