IRS says thieves stole tax info from 100,000

I wonder if by some strange chance the tax returns and tax information of conservativeswere hacked?
 No that would not happen?

ID fraud on steroids………………

On a very serious note with the constant hacks going on today you might want to check about putting a credit freeze on your accounts with the three credit bureaus. Once that is in place you are protected from anyone opening credit in your name.

Check on line for the details on how to accomplish it.

Thieves used an online service provided by the U.S. government's tax collecting agency to gain access to information from more than 100,000 taxpayers, the Internal Revenue Service said Tuesday. The information included tax returns and other tax information on file with the IRS.The IRS said the thieves accessed a system called "Get Transcript." In order to access the information, the thieves cleared a security screen that required knowledge about the taxpayer, including Social Security number, date of birth, tax filing status and street address.

Well, my ID was stolen by thieves filing fraudulent tax returns this year, so, apparently, you don't know sh*t from shinola.

You've manufactured a little myth to reinforce your worldview, haven't you?

Do you understand that this was not a release of tax information by the administration or some political group?

It was a criminal act, carried out to defraud the government and get money.
It has nothing to do with the intramural hatefest of conservatives against the rest of us.

"Using Social Security numbers, birth dates, street addresses and other personal information obtained elsewhere, the criminals completed a multistep authentication process and requested the tax returns and other filings, the I.R.S. said. Information from those forms was used to file fraudulent returns, the I.R.S. said, and the agency sent nearly $50 million in refunds before it detected the scheme."

Here is an interesting related article titled

IRS data theft: 5 things you need to know

In addition to the 5 things, one interesting piece of info from the article --- the IRS gave criminals who filed fraudulent refunds an estimated $5.8 billion in 2013, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Good info. I was affected by this situation directly.
It didn't cost me any money, but a lot of grief.

Anyway, I did my taxes like always on Turbotax. When I attempted to file the return was rejected by the IRS saying that another return had already been filed under either my or my spouse's SSN.
So, I had to paper file, and then file an identity theft affidavit complete with all manner of proof of ID.
Then I spoke directly with the IRS. Apparently, someone used my wife's SSN to file a fradulent return.

It's an ongoing headache. But, The IRS reps I've spoken to seem on top of this.
