U.S. gun manufacturing soars as Americans worry about security

Thanks to our President!

U.S. gun manufacturing soars as Americans worry about security

The American firearms industry is as healthy as ever, seeing an unprecedented surge that has sent production of guns soaring to more than 10.8 million manufactured in 2013 alone — double the total of just three years earlier.

The 2013 surge — the latest for which the government has figures — came in the first full year after the December 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, signaling that the push for stricter gun controls, strongly backed by President Obama, did little to chill the industry despite the passage of stricter laws in states such as New York, Maryland, Connecticut and California.

So, this is good?
Tell us what you think for a change.
Stick around and articulate a point of view rather than running off and starting 12 threads that you then abandon

I'd say this is thanks to fear.

And I don't necessarily think this proliferation of firearms is necessarily a good thing, for our economy, for our safety, or something to be proud of.

Thanks for the intelligent comments, rongone.
What a refreshing contrast to the mindless gloating offered above

Yes, the NRA realized long ago that stoking fear DOES sell guns.

I wish more people would adhere to the philosophy of Gen. Colin Powell -

"We're Americans. We don't walk around afraid."

Why is common "thanking" the President for increased gun sales since 2012?

I guess thanking Adam Lanza would be in poor taste?

Americans worry about security

I wonder - What are the typical security concerns of the average American?

I get someone having a gun for home protection, particularly if one lives in a sketchy neighborhood. But otherwise, what's the big fear and what does it have to do with the president?

Statistically speaking, violent and property crime is down in the U.S.

So what is everyone afraid of?

Beats me. Perhaps common will return to the thread and explain.

I would like to understand this passion for guns. The exaggerated sense of their importance, the fear, and most of all the belief of what guns do for safety and society that is completely at odds with the facts.

Help us, common.

I'd like to know that as well Common. What are you top two or three security concerns? Street crime? Home invasion? ISIS showing up in your neighborhood?

I recognize that anything can happen to anyone and that no community is safe from violence, but do you believe you are forced to concern yourself on a daily basis with your personal security?
