I would agree that the move away from local police forces being quasi-military forces is a good thing. I would suggest that the police force needs to be more like a neighborhood operation than an invading special operations unit. I would like to see smaller precincts/police stations located around the neighborhoods they are responsible for rather than large central buildings located in the government complex. I would like to see police interacting on a daily basis with the people they police. I don't want to see them lurking around in cars scoping out the local population as their only interaction (other than arrests) with the people. Currently, in many cases, there is an us-against-them reactionary relationship between the police and the general population. This needs to change. Somehow we need to re-establish mutual trust and respect between the general public and the police who are there to maintain safety.
