34rd Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service

Friday, May 15, 2015

34rd Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service
Sponsored by the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police and the Grand Lodge Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary. The Memorial Service will be held on the West Front of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The Service begins at 11:00 a.m. and is expected to run approximately 2 hours.

It is traditional for police officers to wear a black band over their badges in mourning when one of their fellow officers is killed in the line of duty.

In total, 126 officers were killed in 2014. That's a 24 percent increase from 2013

What do you consider to be the root causes of this increase in police officer homocides?

Excuse me, but this is an EXCHANGE. A discussion board with a free exchange of ideas. It is a place of discourse.

It is NOT merely a bulletin board to post articles or links to articles. It is NOT a place to extol propaganda without discussion. If you post, you should expect other participants to reply to your post.

Hopefully, all participants understand that concept.

You posted this stat and I think it is significant.  I assume you do, too, Common, or you would not have included it in your post.  I think rongone's question is relevant.

Yea, common, seeing as this is the third thread you've started on the same topic, let's give Rongone some leeway to start an actual discussion about the dangers police officers face.
They can't all just be tribute threads.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: 34rd Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service

The question is relevant.

Keep in mind:  Line of Duty Deaths (LODD) memorialized on the wall in Washington DC include a vehicle accidents and heart attacks on the job as well as felonious assaults.

The Officer Down Memorial Page www.odmp.org is an excellent resource for comparing the number of LODD from each cause year by year.

Vehicle accidents and/or officers struck by a vehicle are usually the # 2 cause of LODD, heart attacks # 3.

Law enforcement agencies are revising their protocols to increase officer safety on traffic stops and accident investigations.  Remember, we lost a Northern Regional Officer in 2008 on a crash reconstruction detail--now the policy has changed that ALL lanes of the highway are shut down for reconstructions.

As for heart attacks, departments are mandating physical fitness standards and wellness programs.

Thanks for the info, Tarnation.  That gives us more insight into the LODD memorial service.  I was not aware that vehicle accidents and heart attacks were included in the numbers.

Pennsylvania Motor Patrolman Dean Ziegler - Vehicle Accident
York City Patrolman Henry Schaad - Gunfire ricochet while attempting rescue during York riots
York County Deputy Sheriff Edward Schroeder - Heart attack during physical training at Academy
Northern York Regional Patrolman David Tome - Vehicular homicide while reconstructing previous accident.

Also remembered from neighboring Adams County:
