I think that they hate each other just as much. I have not seen stats but I believe that there has been much more carnage amongst the competing tribes and religious factions in the area than that created by the US.
I do believe, however, that we will not be the ones to bring any final solution to what ails the region.

I suspect a significant number of people would agree with you.
Which begs the question; why do we keep trying? I mean apart from the oil interests.

Good question, CT. How do we make the Shiites and Sunnis be friends with eachother? Maybe they need a common enemy. That's where we come in.

Recent history kind of tells us that even though they dislike Westerners, their real problem is with each others culture.

In the last major conflict (Iran/Iraq) the UN actually helped broker resolution (United Nations Security Council resolution 598) that led to the end of the fighting that by some extimates had up to 1 million casualities.
Is there a place for the UN in the current mess in the Middle East ?
