Trump endorses the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
President Donald Trump during a Wednesday Cabinet meeting spoke approvingly of the Soviet Union's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan as he made a number of inaccurate assertions about Russian and Afghan history.
Trump claimed the Soviets invaded Afghanistan to fight terrorists, which is not true. The president also said the Soviet Union went "bankrupt" because of its decade-long involvement in the Afghan War, which is also inaccurate.
"Russia used to be the Soviet Union. Afghanistan made it Russia because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan," Trump said.
"The reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia. They were right to be there," the president added. "The problem is it was a tough fight. And literally they went bankrupt. They went into being called Russia again as opposed to the Soviet Union. A lot of these places you're reading about now are no longer part of Russia because of Afghanistan."
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Jimmuh Carter and his successors pinned their hopes on an Afghan "freedom fighter" named Osama Bin Laden.
How did that work out?
Keep in mind: Afghanistan was considered part of the Soviet orbit prior to 1979. The so-called "invasion" was just a pretext for boosting US Military spending and reinstuting registration for the Draft.

I'm not connecting the dots between Carter - and Reagan's - support of the Mujahideen, and Trump's erroneous description of the History of the Afghan war that he spewed yesterday.
He has become the first President in US history to express approval for an act of aggression committed by the Soviet Union against a neighbor.
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.
