Civil rights watchdog: Pittsburgh shooting part of 'white terrorism'

Pa. civil rights watchdog: Pittsburgh shooting part of 'white terrorism'

-- The mass shooting in a Pittsburgh synagogue Saturday was part of a trend Chad Lassiter prays he won't have to talk about anymore.

As the executive director of the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, Lassister has spent a lot of time this year fighting against growing racism, antisemitism and discrimination.

Lassiter started his new position in the spring, as the York Daily Record broke a story about five black women being told to leave a public golf course for playing too slowly. He soon had to respond to additional York County incidents after that:

the fatal shooting of a white man who defended his black friend against racial slurs
KKK fliers left in various parts of the county
a KKK leader showing up at a town hall designed to address racism
an uptick in hate groups
an increase in discrimination complaints against women during the #MeToo movement, and more.

He was exasperated after the commission attended a vigil Saturday night in Pittsburgh, honoring the 11 dead and six injured in the shooting at the Jewish Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill.

"We mourn the beautiful souls that were lost today but at the same time we confront white terrorism and white nationalism, which is a threat to our very principles of democracy," Lassiter said.

He attributed the Pittsburgh shooting to the availability of weapons and a long history of antisemitism he said often goes unchecked in our democracy. He's also noticed a resurgence of white supremacy and "white terrorism" in the Trump era.

"This latest incident tells us that we need more than healing after these sorts of horrific incidents in Pennsylvania. We need to track down where hate is and work in a collaborative to expose it and root it out before it leads to these barbaric outcomes," Lassiter said.

The Anti-Defamation League has also noticed an increase in hate and antisemitism.

League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt in a statement said the Pittsburgh shooting was the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in U.S. history.

"It is simply unconscionable for Jews to be targeted during worship on a Sabbath morning, and unthinkable that it would happen in the United States of America in this day and age. Unfortunately, this violence occurs at time when ADL has reported a historic increase in both anti-Semitic incidents and anti-Semitic online harassment," Greenblatt said.

Southern Poverty Law Center is also tracking an increase in white supremacy groups throughout the U.S. Of those, neo-Nazi groups showed the most growth, with a 22 percent uptick from 917 in 2016 to 953 in 2017.

There are presently 36 hate groups in Pennsylvania, including a Holocaust denial group in York County, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Of course in the eyes of the resist movement President Trump is responsible for all the vial evil in the world today!

Who moved the US embassy to Jerusalem?
Who supports the state of Israel 1000%?

Just more distortion............

Interesting that the clip I posted uses the word ‘trump ‘ exactly once.
It doesn’t attribute the violence to Donald Trump directly. It merely notes the easily confirmed fact that the incidence of hate crimes has increased in the ‘Trump era’. 2016-2018.
And it has.

You might want to read with more care and avoid knee jerk reactions.

By the way, how does moving the US embassy prove that one is not bigoted?

Trump  is not the cause ................ he's merely a symptom of it.

I agree. Trump is simply a self promoting grifter.
That is was possible for someone like that to become president is a result of the evil and dysfunctional state of our politics

MINNESOTA (The Borowitz Report)—

A vast majority of Americans would feel significantly safer if an enormous caravan consisting of angry white men left the country, a new poll indicates.

The poll, conducted by the University of Minnesota’s Opinion Research Institute, suggests that the concept of an angry-white-male caravan could be the most wildly popular policy proposal in the run-up to Tuesday’s midterm elections.

In an indication of just how much support the proposal has, many Americans said that they would personally contribute gas money to help get the caravan on its way.

Despite the popularity of the caravan, however, there was disagreement over what the optimal number of angry white men to depart with it would be, with some suggesting a figure of twenty thousand and others preferring a number as high as forty million.

Additionally, the implementation of such a caravan could face major obstacles; the survey indicates that both Mexican and Canadian voters overwhelmingly oppose any influx whatsoever of angry white American males.

I think that, in order to have a productive discussion, we ought to avoid hyperbole.
No one here blamed Trump for " All of the vile evil in the world today". It's silly to suggest that.

Trump's language is divisive. He panders to bigots and white nationalists.
Hate crimes have increased since his election.
Trump owns some responsibility for that.

Sorry, but it is what it is.
