France First!
In the summer of 1966 a wave of nationalism swept thru France, led by Charles de Gaulle. Sick of American dominance, de gaulle called for a Europe free of American 'interference'. France, if it was to be great again' would go it alone without allies.
The movement culminated with France pulling out of NATO and with de Gaulle calling for the 'Removal of all foreign soldiers from French Soil'.
President Lyndon Johnson cabled the French leader and asked him if that included the nearly 50,000 American soldiers who fought and died liberating France and who are now buried in French soil.
