What in the World is He Doing?
Brussels (CNN)President Donald Trump came out brawling in his first public comments here ahead of NATO's annual summit, accusing a close US ally of being "a captive of Russia" and all-but ordering members of the alliance to increase their defense spending "immediately."
Trump's provocative comments -- aimed at Germany -- at the outset of the NATO summit are sure to amplify the sense of unease among the United States' closest European allies. Their concerns had already set in ahead of Trump's arrival on the continent, following weeks during which the US President has increasingly and vociferously aired out his grievances against many of them.

You have to understand that Trump is not acting the way he does with the best interests of the United States in mind. He does things because they benefit him personally.
Part of the trump 'show' seems to be picking out villains to have dramatic confrontations with. Mexicans, Muslims, the Bushes, Lock her up, etc. For a long time it has been conventional wisdom with the talk radio crowd, & loudmouths at bars, that the Europeans are freeloaders. So the base loves this. They don't understand that the US does not below to NATO as some sort of favor to the Europeans.
Beating up on our NATO allies is easy, because unlike Russia, they won't shoot back. Great way to appease a bunch of idiot bigots who support you. And, who cares if it makes the world less safe. It will be some future President who has to send American kids to war.
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

On the eve of the NATO summit, European Council President Donald Tusk pushed back against Trump's constant criticism of European allies and urged him to remember who his friends are when he meets with Putin in Helsinki.
"Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don't have all that many," he said.

The key to understanding Trump - he views the Presidency like professional wrestling.
You pick villains, and then stage dramatic fights with them to amuse you fans.
