How Fox Manufactures Outrage

Take a look at this:

George Washington U. Students Petition to Get Rid of 'Offensive' Colonials Mascot
http://insider.foxnews.com/2018/05/04/george-washington-university-students-launch-petition-change-colonials-mascot-nickname

More than 200 George Washington University students have signed a petition calling for the school to adopt a new mascot and nickname because the current moniker, Colonials, is "extremely offensive."

"The historically, negatively-charged figure of Colonials has too deep a connection to colonization and glorifies the act of systemic oppression," the petition reads.

It suggests alternative nicknames such as "Hippos" or "Riverhorses."

The Colonials mascot was adopted in 1926 to honor the school's namesake, George Washington, and is intended as a reference to colonial America and the Continental Army.

Hmmm.
Now, according to their website, the total enrollment of GWU is 27,159. So, if 200 students signed that petition, that would be 0.73% of the student body. That's about the same number of passionate wackadoos who show up every October to hold a mock trial for Columbus.

It's really nothing to worry about.

BUT, it feeds right into the narrative of an assault on 'Traditional values' etc. So, thousands of perpetually angry white conservatives who have never set foot on the Campus of GWU, never sent a dollar in a gift, never gave the place a thought, will be outraged at the criticism of this dear mascot that, five minutes ago, they didn't know existed.

And, isn't giving the perpetually angry people something to be outraged about pretty much the Fox mission?

I'm under siege I tell ya!

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: How Fox Manufactures Outrage

Why would 'Fox Followers' be interested with facts if it doesn't fit into stirring the pot to perpetuate tribalism and fueling culture wars.
