WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would maintain flexibility to adjust proposed metals tariffs on a country-by-country basis, hours before he is expected to meet with metal industry executives and workers to discuss the new trade actions.
“We’re going to be very flexible,” Mr. Trump said at the outset of a cabinet meeting at the White House. The president said tariffs might not be necessary on Canada and Mexico if the North American Free Trade Agreement was renegotiated to his satisfaction.
Mr. Trump also suggested there could be a carve-out for Australia, which he called a “great country” and a “long-term partner.”
"We’ll be doing something with them,” he said of Australia. “We’ll be doing something with other partners.”
Mr. Trump said the new tariffs would start at 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum, but could be adjusted for specific countries.
“I’ll have a right to go up or down depending on the country,” he said, adding that he could also add or drop countries from the tariffs.

I prefer leadership (both on the dispensing and receiving end) which justifies its apparent inconsistencies rather than valuing "consistency" and a one size-doesn't-fit-all approach.
The former requires a lot of thought, research, and reflection. The latter could be crafted and executed by a robot.
Think of "mandatory sentences" and "zero-tolerance policies". They remove all discretion from those charged with their execution. No thought required, just rubber stamp. An all too easy way out.

This is typical trump.
First a very dramatic announcement;
Then the realization that it was impulsive and not thought out;
And now the staged walk back hoping that they won’t notice.

He has no idea what the hell he is doing as a leader of a democratic nation. He is constantly throwing out shit, insults, and opinions without any facts to back up what is going through his brain ............ sort of a stream of consciousness and manifesting itself via tweet storms.
A teacher friend of mine has plastered the walls of the hallway outside of his classroom with Trump tweets. He's got 2000+ of them printed and posted, and to read through the entire 'artwork' donning the wall reminds me of some kind of disjointed, incoherent, random gibberish spewed from a person completely out-of-touch with reality.

I knew it ................ the 'no exceptions' with this tariff plan has some holes. Looks like Canada, Mexico, and Australia will be exempt. Expect the same thing for the EU, Japan, and South Korea. Stay tuned.

In the end there will be much less than meets the eye.
But, we got drama. We got to jut our chin out for the camera

What a piece of work that Trump is. His followers won't go beyond the "no exceptions' thing he said when this whole thing started and believe he's 'draining the swamp'. As I said before, he has no idea what the hell he's doing and governing the country by the seat of his pants.

He totally flip flops his position on everything.
