Did Donald Trump just say the solution to gun deaths in schools is to arm teachers? You gotta be kidding me. Holy shit!
As a former teacher of 33 years of service, I can't tell you how much of this is the dumbest idea I ever heard. Please someone tell me that isn't his plan to address this problem.

Here is the thing I find wrong with the theory that arming teachers, administrators, coaches, custodians, retired Veterans or policeman, etc. in the school to “protect the students”. So, we have a dozen or so school employees trained in firearms, certified in gun safety, with concealed carry permits resident at the school. A maniac enters the school armed with a semi-automatic weapon hell bent on killing as many people as they can. The fact that it is well known in the community that this school has armed employees on site is not going to deter a shooter in this frame of mind. The killer starts shooting. The school goes into its crisis mode. Students and teachers barricade and hunker down in place. Authorized armed school employees mobilize and begin using tactics to confront the shooter. Police and tactical units arrive on campus and begin their tactics to methodically clear the classrooms and hallways, move students to safe areas, and hunt down the shooter. Suddenly the realize that there are a dozen people in the building running around with guns. How do the police make immediate decisions on who is a “good guy with a gun” and who is “a bad guy with a gun”. With that scenario, I can see more shootings of innocents, more confusion, more open fire, and a larger kill zones. Anybody that has been involved in a real open fire zone will be happy to explain that feeling to those wannabe heroes out there.
One more thought: when the shooter arrives on campus, at the mall, at the theater, at the concert, etc., it is already too late. The twisted logic that making buildings “more secure” being the answer to preventing these mass shootings is window dressing. Kind of like the TSA that misses identifying weapons and bombs through their own screening process testing at a 90% clip. Preventative action is what needs to be identified and implemented to identify the state of mind that leads to someone becoming a potential shooter.
And it is imperative that reasonable gun controls be part of the discussion and the solution. Coordination and dissemination of stringent universal background checks. Complete training and licensing of gun owners. Licensing and training must be updated every year. Gun owners must obtain liability insurance to cover any firearms they own. Gun manufacturers should be held with partial liability for any crimes committed with their products. Mandatory gun locks and gun safes for storage. Age limits on ownership, at least 21 years old. Semi automatic weapons should be illegal to possess by anyone outside of law enforcement or U.S. military forces. Bump stocks and other added mechanics utilized to convert weapons from single shot to semi-automatic or automatic firing should be illegal to manufacture or possess. Large capacity clips/magazines should be illegal to manufacture or possess. Real hunters, trap shooters, target shooters, and “sportsman” should have no problem with these common sense solutions. It does not end their second amendment rights. They can still go hunting with a rifle designed for that purpose. They cans still go target or skeet shooting with a weapon designed for that purpose. They can still sleep with a pistol next to their bed to “protect” themselves and their families from a “bad guy with a gun” and feel some pride in being a “good guy with a gun”.

The shooter in Florida killed 17 people in 6 minutes.
Would a teacher even be able to get his AR out and run up the stairs in time to stop it.
Obviously not.
Worst idea ever.

I vote to adopt rongone's plan.
And, let's add to the discussion the fact that the 'trained teacher' will someday blow away an innocent child during the shootout in the classroom or hallway. Then what? For that reason alone, there is no way I'd volunteer to be one of 'gun-trained' teachers, not to mention the very real possibility that some kid could somehow get his hands on a 'trained' teacher's weapon either on purpose or accidentally.
