Trump Backs Roy Moore

Who's surprised?  At least we know where the face of the Republican Party stands.

He pointed out that Roy Moore "totally denies" sexual misconduct with a string of teenage girls, including a 14-year-old, when he was in his 30s."We don't need a liberal person in there, a Democrat," Mr Trump said of next month's election. The White House previously said Mr Trump thought the Moore allegations were "extremely troubling."

He also voiced support for the scores of women who have felt emboldened to level sexual misconduct allegations since last month's downfall of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein."Women are very special," Mr Trump said.

A complete and utter disgrace.
I am ashamed of my country.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: Trump Backs Roy Moore

A JMC Analytics and Polling survey conducted in the immediate aftermath of the first set of allegations found that most evangelicals (71 percent) said they wouldn’t dissuade them from voting for Moore. A week after the initial allegations were leveled, Moore appeared at a news conference with a group of national Christian conservative leaders. During the conference, they presented a letter praising Moore as a “man of integrity who has never wavered from his valiant defense of the unborn, the Ten Commandments, and the Constitution.”

This constituency’s loyalty to a man who is accused of preying on teenage girls is a head-scratcher, or even hypocritical, coming as it does from the ranks of “values voters,” who place issues related to traditional sexual morality at the heart of their political agenda.

How can they support a child molester?
I admit to being confused. Just what "Values" do Values voters treasure?

I had mistakenly believed that Values Voters would prioritize a candidate's character, meaning whether a candidate personally embodies Christian values such as kindness, honesty and sexual morality.

However, that is simply not the case. A candidate's personal faith and religious convictions are not the motivator for values Voters. Instead, specific policy positions held by the candidate that were undergirded by their own religious faith are the primary motivator.

From at least the late 1980s influential Christian conservative leaders like Pat Robertson and Ralph Reed have told Evangelicals that the two-parent, heterosexual, Christian nuclear family was threatened by incursions by secularism, feminism and moral relativism. They have been told that they are "under siege".
Frankly, Evangelicals have so frightened themselves that they will support any candidate who tells them what they want to hear. Even if he is a child molester.

And Roy Moore and Donald Trump will be there to cynically manipulate them.
