Re: Woman Says Roy Moore Initiated Sexual Activity When She Was 14

Mitt Romney: 'Innocent Until Proven Guilty' Doesn't Apply to Roy Moore

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney took to Twitter Friday to speak out against Roy Moore’s alleged sexual misconduct, writing that he “is unfit for office and should step aside.”

Moore, the Republican nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama, has been accused of initiating romantic or sexual relationships with four women when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s. These women — including Leigh Corfman, who says she was 14 when a 32-year-old Moore approached her in an Alabama courtroom — spoke on record to the Washington Post.

Romney wrote on Twitter that he “believe[s] Leigh Corfman” and that “innocent until proven guilty is for criminal convictions, not elections.”

The politician’s condemnation of Moore is a marked change from many of his Republican colleagues, who, though they have denounced Moore’s alleged actions, have couched calls for him to step down in language that casts doubt about the veracity of allegations.

Bishop Romney's statement is truly deplorable.

Ask any SVU detective:  "Victims" sometimes lie.   That is why there are criminal statues against falsifications, whether sworn or unsworn.

And don't forget that false accusation is covered in the 10 Commandment.  God knows that it is a perennial problem.

The accused often lies.
In fact, one might argue that the accused lie more often than do the victims in the national experience.
How often is an angry denial followed at some later date with an admission?

I don't think we should confuse the 'court of public opinion' vs the 'court of law', and we could throw in civil courts as well.

For example, Bill O'Reilly was never found to be guilty by a court of law, but he did pay his accuser 30 million dollars to shut up.  Bill Cosby was never found to be guilty in a court of law, but in the court of public opinion, he was cooked.  O.J. Simpson was found not guilty in a court of law, but found guilty in a civil court.  Harvey Weinstein hasn't been found guilty of anything yet, but his career, along with Spacey and CK went down the tubes.  We could go on with many other examples, but you get the picture.

The court of public opinion is important, especially among high profile people.  That's the way it is.

Let's bring it closer to home, Tarnation.  Suppose your 14 year old daughter or your wife tells you a teacher or your wife's co-worker sexually abused them.  You're going to go to a school board meeting or your wife's boss and tell them, "Wait a minute, my daughter and/or wife could be lying.  Don't take any action until they are found guilty in a court of law."

Given a few of his own statements I can see that he certainly has in the past cultivated young girls. I will let the courts decide on the final outcome.

My biggest problem with Moore are his various stances which from birtherism to homophobia to his views on religion and immigrants give me great pause that this person should ever be elected to a position of power.

Not sure that may matter to Alabama voters.  We shall see.

This will be an interesting race to watch. If Moore wins, and I expect that he will, I think that it means that rural whites in the South are just gone as far as Democrats go. They should just right them off and concentrate on other groups.
Let's watch.
