Lincoln's Funeral Train stopped in New Freedom, York
Lincoln slain
Assassination and funeral train reverberated through York 150 years ago
The Great Emancipator's foul assassin still roamed the countryside as Abraham Lincoln's funeral train chugged its way somberly toward York. Mortally wounded a week before on Good Friday, Lincoln was already something of a secular saint to the Union torn by war. But the nation's tears were sown with anger, fear and confusion. Some feared the assassin's conspiracy might reignite the conflict. The killer, John Wilkes Booth, had York County ties and some wondered if he might be hiding here.Booth would soon be cornered and killed in Virginia, but the scars of the nation's wounds 150 years ago still heal, lessons of a bloody past still being learned today.

Also very interesting that most of York County did not vote for Lincoln. Here is an old York article that discussed that.
