Re: Trump just discovered that PR is an island in the middle of the Ocean

Our childish president would rather engage in playground bullying than really doing his job and helping out American citizens who are suffering from a natural disaster. What an insensitive buffoon ! ! !

Maybe he should walk a mile in their shoes to gain some understanding of their plight rather than just degrading the situation and personally criticizing those who speak out. After all, he’s supposed[/i to be representing [i]ALL Americans, not just those NYC millionaires he surrounds himself with and the ignorant voters that actually believed he would drain the swamp and build the wall. Trump is proving that his administration will go down as the worst president ever in the history of the country.

Trump attacks Puerto Rican mayor for 'nasty' comments amid island's crisis

President Trump lashed out on Twitter at San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz on Saturday morning over what he implied was insufficient gratitude for federal help in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

“The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump,” the commander in chief wrote. “Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help.”

It’s not clear what, exactly, caused Trump to lash out against Cruz, who has issued increasingly desperate pleas for help as her island of 3.4 million people struggles to obtain clean water, fuel, electricity and other basic supplies.

Cruz has criticized the federal relief effort generally. “We are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency,” Cruz said at a Friday news conference. “I am begging, begging anyone that can hear us, to save us from dying.”

Trump has repeatedly touted the response effort, suggesting that Puerto Rico’s poor infrastructure and “massive debt” is to blame for the U.S. territory’s ongoing crisis. The president also frequently points out that Puerto Rico is an island, which complicates recovery efforts. “This is an island surrounded by water, big water, ocean water,” he said Friday.

Administration officials have followed Trump’s push for optimistic messaging. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke claimed that the recovery was a “good news story.”

Cruz fired back during a CNN interview Friday morning.

“Well, maybe from where she’s standing it’s a good-news story,” said the mayor, who has been pleading for help since Maria hit Puerto Rico more than a week ago. “When you’re drinking from a creek, it’s not a good-news story. When you don’t have food for a baby, it’s not a good-news story. When you have to pull people down from their buildings — I’m sorry, but that really upsets and frustrates me.”

She continued: “Dammit, this is not a good-news story, this is a people-are-dying story.”

Trump, set to visit Puerto Rico next Tuesday, also used his Saturday-morning Twitter microphone to attack the media’s coverage of the response efforts. See his full social-media barrage below:

…Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They….

…want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 Federal workers now on Island doing a fantastic job.

The military and first responders, despite no electric, roads, phones etc., have done an amazing job. Puerto Rico was totally destroyed.

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 30, 2017

Fake News CNN and NBC are going out of their way to disparage our great First Responders as a way to "get Trump." Not fair to FR or effort!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 30, 2017

I will be going to Puerto Rico on Tuesday with Melania. Will hopefully be able to stop at the U.S. Virgin Islands (people working hard).

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 30, 2017

The Fake News Networks are working overtime in Puerto Rico doing their best to take the spirit away from our soldiers and first R's. Shame!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 30, 2017

After Trump’s attack, Cruz tweeted that local life-saving efforts should not face distractions.

The goal is one: saving lives. This is the time to show our "true colors". We cannot be distracted by anything else. pic.twitter.com/7PAINk19xM

Re: Trump just discovered that PR is an island in the middle of the Ocean

Trump said in one of his idiotic tweets about U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands coping with the aftermath of two devastating of hurricanes: “They want everything to be done for them“

He has insinuated that the residents of the islands are lazy people who feel they deserve to be catered to. His juvenile tweet storm against island residents and the mayor of San Juan (these are citizens that he is supposed to serve and positively represent) making these people out to be selfish and privileged.

Given that the main source of income for the people in the islands is tourism, i’d Surmise that they know more about serving others, not being served. That’s the exact opposite of Trump and his entourage.

Well, if there’s anyone in this conversation with a heightened opinion of himself, it’s our own self serving, narcissistic, braggadocious, self described billionaire president.

See the pictures in the attached article if you have any doubts or neither require further confirmation.

Trump has the same bigoted, stereotypical views of Puerto Ricans that many in his base have.

Re: Trump just discovered that PR is an island in the middle of the Ocean

While the President continues to play golf (yet today as well) and do one insulting tweet after another (many directed at PR), the mayor continues to do her job in helping the people of PR recover. She herself is living on a cot in the civic center as her home was also destroyed as many others by Hurricane Maria. There is still so much to do there. Fortunately General Buchanan just assessed correctly that much more resource needs to be sent to PR to get things back in working order. His leadership is one that is truly needed with his logistics and supply chain experience. Too bad it took this long to decide to use this type of resource. May his and others presence there bring needed relief as quickly as possible.

Re: Trump just discovered that PR is an island in the middle of the Ocean

Trump’s claims that everything is going well in regards to relief from the devastation that Hurricanes Irma and Maria dumped on the USVI and Puerto Rico must be true. At least from his narrow minded perception from his golf resorts and Washington DC bureaucrats that owe their jobs to him. So good, in fact that dear leader decided that he would let the antiquated Jones Act to go back into effect which will limit the shipping options to those islands in the middle of the ocean.

His FEMA administrator in Puuuuerrrto Rrrrricooo already let us know that they have made the decision to ignore the mayor of San Juan because she insists on more aid for the people. Now the governor of Puuuuerrrrrto Rrrrricooo is questioning the decision to put the Jones Act back into effect. He’d better watch it or they’ll just ignore him too. The president and his administration have already made it clear that they have chosen to ignore the millions of Americans in Puuuuerrrrto Rrrrrricooo and the USVI.

The Jones Act Waiver For Puerto Rico Just Expired And Won't Be Renewed

WASHINGTON ― The Jones Act waiver for Puerto Rico expired Sunday night, and “it is not being extended at this time,” Department of Homeland Security spokesman David Lapan told HuffPost on Monday.

DHS had temporarily waived the Jones Act ― an arguably outdated law that imposes exorbitant shipping costs on the U.S. island ― on Sept. 28. The waiver has meant that Puerto Rico has been able to import food, fuel and supplies more quickly, and for half the cost, in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

With the 1920 law back in effect, the island will go back to paying much higher shipping costs to import supplies. The Jones Act requires that all goods shipped between U.S. ports be carried by U.S.-owned and operated ships, which are more expensive vessels than others in the global marketplace. That’s meant that Puerto Rico pays double the costs for goods from the U.S. mainland compared with neighboring islands ― and that U.S. vessels are making bank.

The return to higher shipping costs won’t help Puerto Rico as it tries to climb out of economic devastation. Nearly half of the 3.4 million Americans on the island still don’t have drinking water since Maria hit nearly three weeks ago. Just 15 percent have electricity. Many people still haven’t heard from loved ones, and at least 39 deaths have been attributed to the storm.

Despite the DHS position, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said Monday night that he wants another extension of the Jones Act waiver.

“I think we should have it,” Rossello told CBS News’ David Begnaud. “In this emergency phase, while we’re looking to sustain and save lives, we should have all of the assets at hand.”

Lapan said DHS is “always prepared to review requests on a case-by-case basis and respond quickly” to possible waivers of the Jones Act. But those decisions have to be related to national defense, he said, and are not driven by cost-related matters.

“We believe that extending the waiver is unnecessary to support the humanitarian relief efforts” on Puerto Rico, Lapan said. “There is an ample supply of Jones Act-qualified vessels to ensure that cargo is able to reach” the island.

President Donald Trump, who is spending Monday golfing, had originally hedged on waiving the Jones Act for Puerto Rico at all, saying “a lot of shippers” didn’t want him to do it. He eventually caved to pressure from lawmakers including Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

McCain has been pushing to get rid of the Jones Act altogether. It costs Puerto Rico hundreds of millions of dollars every year, and he recently introduced legislation to nix the law.

“Now that the temporary Jones Act waiver for Puerto Rico has expired, it is more important than ever for Congress to pass my bill to permanently exempt Puerto Rico from this archaic and burdensome law,” McCain said in a statement to HuffPost. “Until we provide Puerto Rico with long-term relief, the Jones Act will continue to hinder much-needed efforts to help the people of Puerto Rico recover and rebuild from Hurricane Maria.”
