Poll: 1 in 3 Pennsylvanians approve of President's job performance

Poll: 1 in 3 Pennsylvanians approve of President Trump's job performance

Just one-third of Pennsylvanians say they approve of President Donald Trump’s job performance, according to a new NBC News/Marist Poll that found similar approval ratings for the commander in chief in two other states that were critical to sending him to the White House.

The pollsters found 52 percent of Pennsylvania adults do not approve of his job performance. In Michigan and Wisconsin, Trump’s approval ratings also are below 40 percent.

Among his core constituencies, the president has retained stronger support, with 71 percent of Pennsylvania Republicans and 81 percent of state voters who supported him in the November election reporting their approval.

But his support is upside down in regions of the state critical to his victory last year: In northeastern Pennsylvania, 43 percent disapprove and 40 percent approve, and in the western part of the state, 45 percent disapprove and 41 percent approve.

More Pennsylvania voters think the economy has strengthened under Trump than believe it has weakened. But a majority say he has not shown signs of delivering on his promise to restore manufacturing jobs, and say America’s standing on the world stage has been weakened during his tenure.

Asked how Trump’s conduct as president makes them feel, 62 percent of Pennsylvania adults responded that they are “embarrassed,” 26 percent said “proud,” and 12 percent were unsure.

The three NBC/Marist polls released Sunday were conducted between Aug. 13 and Thursday. They followed the Aug. 12 violence in Charlottesville, Va., and were conducted in the midst of Trump’s responses to that unrest. The Pennsylvania poll involved 915 state adults, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points. Most (773) of those polled were registered voters.

“For residents of these three critical electoral states, the reaction to the first round of the Trump presidency is decidedly negative,” said Lee M. Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “Residents are clearly dissatisfied in how candidate Trump transitioned into President Trump.”

Majorities of residents in Pennsylvania and the two other states surveyed had an unfavorable view of both parties. Republicans fared worse, with 57 percent of Pennsylvanians reporting an unfavorable view of the GOP, and 45 percent reporting an unfavorable view of Democrats.

Forty-seven percent of Pennsylvanians said they would prefer next year’s congressional elections to shift control of Congress to Democrats, while 37 percent would prefer that Republicans maintain control and 16 percent were undecided.

One of those federal lawmakers seeking re-election will be Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, who drew a positive impression from 37 percent of Pennsylvanians, a negative view from 26 percent, and 38 percent were unsure or had not heard of him.

The pollsters asked about only one of his potential challengers, U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, a Republican from Hazleton who has not yet announced whether he will run for the statewide office. Barletta was largely unknown among the poll’s respondents, with 74 percent saying they hadn’t heard of him or weren’t sure of their view, 16 percent holding an unfavorable view and 10 percent having a positive impression of him.

The survey also asked how Pennsylvanians view Gov. Tom Wolf, who also is seeking re-election next year. Among Pennsylvania adults, 46 percent had a positive opinion, 35 percent had an unfavorable view and 19 percent didn’t have an impression of the Democratic governor.

My question would be WHAT Performance ??

Perhaps his stage performance which is all that has happened.

Excellent point. In terms that we usually use to measure performance there isn't much there there.

But, for Trump - and 36%  of Americans - the president's job isn't to accomplish things.
It is to give voice to their primal rage. To thrill and entertain with outrageous comments. To offer villains.

Okay, the title of that article.

I'm curious.  Why does this article lead with the word "Approve" being used over and over when the opposite is a significantly greater value.

Sounds like a slant.

Good point CT.  Maybe leading with "2 of 3 Pennsylvanians Disapprove of Trump's Job Performance" would be 'fake news'.

I find that spin doctoring troubling.

Is this article from one of those sort where the campaign pays for a favorable review regardless of any factual information?

I believe the first time a network took 💰to make a campaign ad look like news their slant on that was to call it something other than what it was.

Their slant:  Infotainment.

The reality:  All Lies

The Morning Call is an Allentown paper that is now owned by Tronc, Inc.
They seem like a serious publication.

Perhaps If they had put the first word of their article in the title, it would have eliminated any problem.

"Just 1 in 3 Pennsylvanians approve of President's job performance."
