Former Carrier employee slams Trump: He 'blew smoke up our asses'

Former Carrier employee slams Trump: He 'blew smoke up our asses'

A 55-year-old former employee of Carrier Corporation slammed President Trump for lying to her and her coworkers about saving their jobs when he made a deal with the plant last year.

Layoffs have begun at Carrier's gas furnace plant in Indiana, with the company shedding 338 Indianapolis-based jobs as part of its first round of departures.

President Trump struck an agreement last November with Gregory Hayes - chairman of the heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration manufacturer's parent company, United Technologies Corporation - to keep 800 Carrier jobs in the U.S. Trump then touted the deal as fulfilling a campaign promise to invest in American workers, even though he had not been inaugurated yet.

The business had previously drawn ire from the Republican presidential candidate and his former Indiana governor running mate, Vice President Pence, for its plan to outsource labor to Mexico.

But despite the rhetoric, Carrier announced in May that a total of 632 people in Indianapolis would be replaced by robots and other automated work processes by December 22.

Brenda Darlene Battle - a Carrier fabrication technician, whose buyout went into effect last week - told The New Yorker she knew Trump wouldn't follow through on the promise to save her job and others, but other people were caught off-guard.

"Trump came in there to the factory last December and blew smoke up our asses," she said. "He wasn't gonna save those jobs. And, if that's the case, he would have saved us and Rexnord, a company around the corner from us that makes parts."

Battle, a 55-year-old Indianapolis native who worked for Carrier since she was 20, said Trump supporters at the factory were quieter now than they had been before the election.

"Some of them got let go (on Thursday), too," Battle said. "People can't support their families."

Battle, who admitted to supporting Hillary Clinton in the election, added she thinks the leader of the company and Trump both knew what would happen to the workers when the cameras went away.

"I think the CEO of Carrier and Trump was in bed together the whole time," she said. "That day Trump came to Carrier, those two were too chummy. The way they sniggled and giggled. That sneaky kind of shit-eating grin."

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.
