Why oh why couldn't the people who voted for him see this coming is beyond me.

This is true. Trumpism is NOT republican. Trumpism borrows the worst features of conservatism, socialism and fascism. It is an anti-intellectual and atheoretical movement, emphasizing the will of the charismatic leader as the sole source of inspiration of a people. It has no guiding dogma beyond intense nationism and the belief that the Dear Leader is always right. It's a cult of personality. Look at how even his most idiotic utterances are hailed as examples of genius by the masses. *

Trumpism resembles the National Socialism of 1930s Germany more than many here are comfortable acknowledging.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

I, for one, will acknowledge that.  I used to wonder how an intelligent populace could get sucked into believing fascist, authoritarian, or totalitarian rule was a good idea.  I'm watching it happen right before my eyes in the 21st century.  Amazing.
