Trump team met with Russian lawyer during campaign

Trump team met with Russian lawyer during campaign

(CNN)Donald Trump's oldest son has told CNN that he, Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort met with a Russian lawyer last year -- the first known meeting of several of the senior-most members of Trump's team and a Russian national during the campaign.

The New York Times, which first reported the previously undisclosed meeting, says it occurred at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016 -- two weeks after Trump clinched the Republican presidential nomination.

"It was a short introductory meeting," Donald Trump Jr. said in a statement to CNN. "I asked Jared and Paul to stop by. We primarily discussed a program about the adoption of Russian children that was active and popular with American families years ago and was since ended by the Russian government, but it was not a campaign issue at that time and there was no follow up."

He added: "I was asked to attend the meeting by an acquaintance, but was not told the name of the person I would be meeting with beforehand."
Trump's representatives did not answer further questions about the meeting.

The Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, founded a group purporting to seek the removal of the Russian adoption ban. That ban was put in place by the Russian government as retaliation for a US law known as the Magnitsky Act, which allows the US to withhold visas and freeze the assets of Russians thought to have violated human rights. Veselnitskaya has also sought the repeal of the Magnitsky Act.
Kushner disclosed the meeting with the Russian lawyer in revised documentation that he submitted to obtain a security clearance for his White House job as a senior adviser to the President, his lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, said in a statement.

When Kushner initially filed his forms, he did not list any contacts with foreign government officials, Gorelick said. Kushner then submitted supplemental information saying he had "numerous contacts" with foreign officials, she said.

Re: Trump team met with Russian lawyer during campaign

An ethics lawyer under former President George W. Bush blasted Donald Trump Jr. for meeting with a Russian lawyer who claimed to have compromising information on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton during the campaign, saying it “borders on treason.”

“This was an effort to get opposition research on an opponent in an American political campaign from the Russians, who were known to be engaged in spying inside the United States,” Richard Painter said Sunday on MSNBC.

“We do not get our opposition research from spies, we do not collaborate with Russian spies, unless we want to be accused of treason.”

It appears as if Jr.'s defense is that his attempt to collude with a foreign power did not yield useful information, so it's Ok, right?

Trump, son push back on NY Times story suggesting Russian collusion

Trump Jr. said he was asked by an acquaintance to meet with the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, who was described to him as somebody who “might have information helpful to the campaign.”
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Trump Jr. said he ended the meeting after about 25 minutes, upon concluding that Veselnitskaya's statements were "vague, ambiguous and made no sense."

"It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information," he said.

Re: Trump team met with Russian lawyer during campaign

statements were "vague, ambiguous and made no sense."

I think Donny, Jr. might be confusing his meeting with the Russian lawyer with a conversation with daddy dearest.

Re: Trump team met with Russian lawyer during campaign

It is amazing the drip, drip, drip of information that initially was NOT brought forward when asked about these same type of interactions and NOW we find one more person in the Trump administration entangled in the Russian involvement.  Whether any in the Trump administration did anything truly nefarious or illegal is for the current probes to unearth, BUT these constant new discoveries of contacts make you wonder why they did not come clean right in the beginning. It certainly is sucking the life blood out of anything they hope to accomplish and at the same time is further disenfranchishing the Trump administration from even the rest of the GOP.
