Georgia congressional race: Run-off election!

The stop Trump movement in Georgia came close but failed to get the win last night. They spent about 8 million on TV ad's which has riled up people who thought the money could be better spent building up the party. A large chunk of that money (90%) came from out of state. A strange thing Jon Ossoff lives just outside of the district and could not vote for himself. The run off election will be in June. The key will be organization.. it's going to be hard to get people to the polls when the kids are out of school and it's summer vacation time. This has to be demoralizing for the democratic party. Loss in Kansas special election and now a run off in Georgia.

Georgia congressional race: Democrat Ossoff, Republican Handel will go to run-off

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/04/19/georgia-congressional-race-democrat-ossoff-republican-handel-will-go-to-run-off.html

A special election in Georgia’s Sixth congressional district failed to produce an outright winner Tuesday, forcing a June 20 runoff between upstart Democrat Jon Ossoff and former Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel. With 100 percent of the precincts reporting, Ossoff had garnered 48 percent of the vote, falling just short of the majority threshold required in the so-called “jungle primary.”

Handel was the top GOP vote-getter at 20 percent, finishing comfortably ahead of technology executive Bob Gray, who received 11 percent of the vote, and former State Senators Judson Hill and Dan Moody, who received 9 percent of the vote respectively.“We are going to rally around Karen Handel,” Gray tweeted late Tuesday as it became clear he would not make the runoff. “We wish her Godspeed.”The winner of the runoff between Handel and Ossoff will succeed Tom Price, who resigned to become Trump's health and human services secretary.Ossoff, a 30-year-old documentary filmmaker and former congressional aide, had sought to parlay opposition to President Donald Trump into an outright victory that would have emboldened Democrats ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

His run attracted more than $8 million in donations, which largely came from outside the state.Republicans nationally and in Georgia acknowledged before polls opened that Ossoff would top the slate of 11 Republicans, five Democrats and two independents who appeared together on one primary ballot. Earlier Tuesday, the GOP hit Ossoff hard for living outside the district, and sought to portray him as a conservatives' nightmare who would increase taxes and take away guns.

"These liberal Democrats failed to inspire voters with a candidate who couldn’t even vote for himself, received 97 percent of his donations from outside the district, and consistently lied about his own weak resume," the Republican National Committee said in a statement.Ossoff acknowledged Tuesday that he lives just south of the district, in Atlanta, so that his girlfriend is close to her work at Emory University's medical complex

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”

Re: Georgia congressional race: Run-off election!

This was the case where a loss was not really a loss. It served notice of what likely will happen in the midterms. It was unlikely that Ossoff did nearly as well as he did. It is expected that the R-triber will win the runoff, but it is certainly not a foregone conclusion. There is a lot of frustration with the current administration between what was "promised" and what has been delivered. IF Trump cannot produce and it looks like he will have battles even within the tribe, then we could see another big shift. Certainly he has the lowest approval ratings right out of the gate of any recent president which does not bode well.

Re: Georgia congressional race: Run-off election!

With the disaster that has been Trump's first hundred days and the money that was pumped into the race nationally into a moderate district, I think it was reasonable to assume that Ostroff would have gotten to 50% if there really was this massive amount of national outrage against Trump and the Republicans.

He didn't so I kind of think that is a defeat for the democrats. And I predict that Karen Handel will win the runoff by a small margin.

That said, there was a good sign in this election in terms of who on the Republican side lost.

Newt Gingrich, who represented the district endorsed Judson Hill, who came in 5th.

And Amy Kremer, who was a national tea party leader and was endorsed by Sean Hannity and former Trump spokeswoman Katrina Pierson as well as others in the Trump orbit, only got 349 votes.

Re: Georgia congressional race: Run-off election!

I'm not sure how to look at this election.

If one views it as a referendum of the Trump administration:
Clinton got about 47% of the vote. Ossoff got about 48%.
So, neither side managed to move the needle at all.

If you look at it from another perspective, a Democrat came in first, and got 48% of the vote in a district that a democrat has not won since 1978. Not bad.
Now, in the runoff the republicans will come together behind the single remaining GOP candidate. And she will likely win. Maybe.
But, I doubt that she gets the 61% that Price won by just a few months ago.
Is that because of the candidate, name recognition, or national events? I dunno.

But, if things go that way, it will be a disappointment for the democrats.
And, on the republican side it will be more cause for a sigh of relief rather than cause for chest thumping.

Eking out close victories in deep red districts is better than losing. But one could hardly argue that Trump has rained success on the Republican party, or that Trumpism is a wave.
We remain a bitterly, and nearly equally, divided nation.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: Georgia congressional race: Run-off election!

It was just the first shot across the bow.

Thing have not progressed at all in the first 100 days and with the in-fighting in the GOP itself it is not likely that many of the things that  were on Trump's agenda will come to fruition.

It is easy to make promises on the campaign trail, but hard to get them into legislation even with a majority in Congress.

We will see IF the D-tribe can capitalize on all of this. They need a coherent message and a couple of new, young leaders to step up to the plate. The country is ripe of REAL CHANGE to improve the ENTIRE LOT of Americans. The question is who can deliver on that.

Re: Georgia congressional race: Run-off election!

I'll only throw in my two cents for what it's worth.

Since some people view politics as a team sport for some reason, as a former coach myself, I would say if my team beat your team by 20 points a couple months ago and yesterday I beat you by 2, I would look at that as a "whew" moment and work harder not to lose the next time we meet.  Of, course your team will work even harder to improve their game and be inspired that beating my team is a real possibility next time.

Re: Georgia congressional race: Run-off election!

I would sincerely like both political parties to get off their ultra partisan high horse holier-than-thou obstructionist pathways and commit themselves to do their jobs when in office. Do the work of the people, not the party. Forget the constant blaming of others for their failure to do their jobs. Learn to collaborate, cooperate, and compromise to pass legislation that benefits all the people, not lobbyists, special interest groups, or big dollar contributors to their re-election. Put their constituents ahead of their personal wants or needs. Be fiscally responsible . . . It's OUR money, not theirs. Personally, I would like to see the demise of the "two party system", and have all candidates and their constituents be independents rather than beholding to the Republican Party or the Democratic Party. The current political bickering in Washington DC will not be beneficial to our representative republic. The political divisions that separate our government and the people into two distinct and uncompromising camps inhibits our ability to sustain a thriving democratic government.
