Rachel Maddow’s career committed suicide live on national TV tonight
Big Trump tax returns “Scoop” flopped, bigly.
President Trump 1 Madcow/MSNBC 0
Rachel Maddow has a history of claiming big scoops which then flop. There was the debunked 2012 big scoop about supposed GOP wrongdoing in Michigan. And the 2014 big scoop that the Koch Brothers were behind Florida groups pushing drug testing for welfare recipients, which was not true. We covered the Florida non-scoop big scoop, Rachel Maddow’s come undone with Koch Derangement Syndrome.
Tonight Maddow claimed to have Donald Trump’s tax returns. The internet lit up.
The interest was stoked when the person who obtained the “tax returns” and was to appear on Maddow’s show tweeted out as similar message.
But very quickly, tax returns (plural) turned into Form 1040 from 2005.The White House pushed back even before airtime.
The White House says President Donald Trump made more than $150 million in income in 2005 and paid $38 million in income taxes that year. The acknowledgement comes as MSNBC host Rachel Maddow says she has obtained part of Trump’s 2005 tax forms. The White House is pushing back pre-emptively, saying that publishing those returns would be illegal. It says, “You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago.”

As to any revelations in the tax return that hurts Trump? Maddow didn’t bring the goods. She started off by stalling on a 15 minute monologue that revealed zero about the returns, giving rise to much mockery.

You know, I often lay awake at night wondering what the folks at Legainsurrection think of the show hosts over at MSNBC.

I'm not following how this is 'career suicide'. Somebody explain this to me.

I'm betting a cold one that she is on the air, in the same or better time slot two years from now.

I believe Joe Scarborough nailed the reason for the leaked return. Typical modus operandi for Trump and his Administration.

Last night was just another reminder of just how horrible cable news is.
I spend yesterday between shoveling and working and the end of the day comes and I sit down to watch some sports and I start getting alerts that Maddow has Trump's tax return from 2005. The White House is issuing responses before the story is even being reported. I flip on MSNBC and on the screen is countdown clock telling me how long I need to wait to hear the story that's going to blow up the Trump administration. The hype on this story is at DEFCON 5. Meanwhile, Sean Hannity, having not seen the story, is already discrediting it via Twitter.
So I watch it and despite all the hype, there was nothing to it.
Now I have always thought Trump should release his tax returns. And Maddow, to her credit, in the first 20 minutes of her show, did give a thorough explanation of why Trump's tax returns matter in terms of insight of who Trump is as a person and as a conduit of tying together several major stories that connect Donald Trump to interests he may have within Russia. So Trump's taxes are an important story.
Which is why the fact that the story was really nothing hurts everyone's ability to get to the truth.
Last night was a black eye for Maddow. If she and David Cay Johnson were tricked by Trump and it was the White House that leaked it, then Trump won the night because all it showed was that in 2005 Trump made a lot of money and paid a bunch of it in taxes.
But in the cable news biz and the internet, they got eyeballs and that takes precedence over everything else.

Good analysis, Lager.
I didn't see it.
Never watch the crap.
It won't hurt her career. Maddows audience is the other side of the same coin that watches fox in that time slot.
They got what they wanted from the show
