Who knows with Trump. IF anyone understands his reasoning please let us all in on it. He uses wild accusations and deflection news so perhaps this is just part of the later.
The returns themselves were provided by an investigative reporter David Cay Johnston who has been following Trump for years. I figure part of this is to help him plug his new book "The Making of Donald Trump".
BTW, Joe Scarborough agrees with both of you that he leaked his own tax returns.
Scarborough: Trump leaked his own tax returns as distraction

Joe can be a little insufferable at times, but he tends to have good political radar.

And what did we find out? President Trump paid 38 million in taxes in 2005. No Russians?
Some where close to a15-minute monologue and nothing to show for it!
Could be classified as a fake news story? Maybe...... Who knows?

I think the point is, Common, that this appears to be a selective leak to make the President look good during this specific year. I think many would like to see more recent returns rather than one cherry-picked from 12 years ago.

Exactly.
I want the full returns.
And I want to see where the rubles, excuse me, dollars came from

Yeah, if there is NOTHING to hide, there is no reason to NOT disclose them.
Just one mover "look over there", "NOT over here" !

My sources confirm that Donald J. Trump selectively leaked a portion of his 2005 tax return at the direction of Steve Bannon to the evil news media in order to further deflect criticism of his false claims against Obama "wire tapping" his offices at Trump towers, his failing "repeal & replace" Obamacare efforts, his refusal to provide access to recent tax returns due to an "IRS audit", his false claims of "creating millions of jobs" in his short tenure, his claim that he has a "secret plan to defeat ISIS" and that he knows more about ISIS than all the generals, his continual denial of having business and now political ties to Russian operatives, his neophyte administration taking credit for the rise in the stock market, he and his incompetent staff continually overstating the effect of his "executive orders" on the American people, his claims that his excellent "negotiating skills" have convinced several corporate executives to restructure their companies and bring back American jobs, and his insistence that the Keystone XL pipeline will use only American made steel and will create hundreds of thousands of permanent high paying American jobs.
So . . . Let's see how long this deflection plays until his West Wing "brain trust" has to come up with another one to cover for him and his advisors outright stupidity and ineptitude.
