Less than half of Republicans believe press important for democracy

Poll: Less than half of Republicans believe free press important for democracy

BY NIKITA VLADIMIROV - 03/02/17 03:31 PM EST  99

Less than half of Republicans say the media's freedom to criticize politicians is very important to democracy, a new poll says.

A Pew Research Center poll released Thursday found that only 49 percent of Republicans view press criticism as very important for maintaining a strong democracy, while 76 percent of Democrats said so.

Despite the sharp partisan divide on the question of press criticism, the poll revealed that both parties are in agreement on several major issues.

Eighty-nine percent of all respondents said fair and open national elections are very important to maintaining a strong democracy.

And 83 percent said the same is true about a system of checks and balances that divides power between three branches of government.

According to the poll, 77 percent of Americans are also in agreement that it would be "too risky" to vest more power in the presidency.

The Pew Research Center poll surveyed a pool of 1,503 adults between Feb. 7-12. The margin of error is 2.9 percent.

That is really disheartening and scary.

I wonder IF they included ALL press (cable vs other including online pubs) if the results would be the same.

There ARE some countries that live pretty much in a press vacuum OTHER than what the government wants them to hear.

When the press picks favorites instead of just reporting the news that is very understandable that self identified republicans would feel that way.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”

So, you believe in a free press only when your side gets favorable coverage.

And, I'm guessing that you believe in freedom of speech when you agree with what is said?
Brilliant.

Just curious Common, what news source do you rely on for 'just reporting the news.'

I realize that there is a lot of negative press against Trump, but I have to say that MOST of it is of his and his Administrations decisions own making.

While on the subject exactly the same could EASILY be said of reporting by BOTH right and left cable news organizations.

I find it fairly amusing when I see members of our venerable legislative branch appearing on various TV news shows speaking out about their views on various accusatory media stories that they consider to be biased. Inevitably, in their defense of their partisan point of view, they will allude to the fact that they are just trying to protect the integrity of the government institution of which they are members.

Don't these people understand that the majority of the American people don't believe that there is little, if any, integrity in the divided, partisan government at this point?
