The Money Is(n't) Pouring In
“I can tell you the money is pouring in. Very nice.”
From last night's speech.
Trump ad-libbed this line after mentioning that he was pressing NATO allies in “very frank and strong discussions,” to meet their financial obligations to the alliance. But the comment is a bit nonsensical.
NATO’s guideline, established in 2006, that defense expenditures should amount to 2 percent of each country’s gross domestic product. In 2016, only four countries besides the United States met that standard, but NATO documents also show that defense spending has increased about three percent from 2015 to 2016. In any case, the money would not be going to the United States or even necessarily to NATO; this is money that countries would spend to bolster their own military.
We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

I am sure that SOME of Trump's anti-NATO rhetoric will have them spending more on their own defense. However, the big down side is that they will look askance at their relationships with the U.S..Pence already had to make one apology tour. And add to this, it further opens the door to additional incursions by Russia in the region.

Some may be tempted to make their own best deal with the Russians since the US has become an unreliable ally.

What is nonsensical is they are using 2016 stats? Are they saying other nations won't pay their fair share from here on. The United States expects that NATO partners will pay their share. It's only fair! Our government needs to support and protect us!

As usual you've missed the point common. The money isn't pouring in because the money doesn't go to the United States or even NATO. It was a stupid thing to say. You just don't get it
