Hate Crime Is Feared as 2 Indian Engineers Are Shot in Kansas

Hate Crime Is Feared as 2 Indian Engineers Are Shot in Kansas

OLATHE, Kan. — “The Jameson guys,” as some on the staff at Austins Bar and Grill knew the pair, were on the patio on Wednesday evening. It was hardly unusual: Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, two immigrants from India, often enjoyed an after-work whiskey at the bar they had adopted as a hangout.

Adam W. Purinton was also there, tossing ethnic slurs at the two men and suggesting they did not belong in the United States, other customers said. Patrons complained, and Mr. Purinton was thrown out.

But a short time later, he came back in a rage and fired on the two men, the authorities said. Mr. Kuchibhotla was killed, and Mr. Madasani was wounded, along with a 24-year-old man who had tried to apprehend the gunman, who fled.

Mr. Purinton, 51, was extradited to Kansas from Missouri on Friday, and he is charged with premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder.

The attack, which the federal and local authorities are investigating as a possible hate crime, reverberated far beyond both states. It raised new alarms about a climate of hostility toward foreigners in the United States, where President Trump has made clamping down on immigration a central plank of his “America first” agenda. The White House strongly rejected the notion that there might be any connection between the shooting and the new administration’s sharp language about immigration.

Adam W. Purinton was charged on Thursday with one count of premeditated first-degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first-degree murder.

Here's your daily reminder that no refugee from the 7 countries named in the Muslim ban has ever done something like this.

Will the Trump Administration work to protect and reassure the Indian-American community?
Could be a "Uniter" moment.

Kansas shooting: Anger, grief as Indian Americans blame Trump

The Indian American community is reacting with outrage and sadness to the fatal shooting of Srinivasan Kuchibhotla, an IT engineer from Hyderabad, at a Kansas bar on Wednesday, and has blamed it on rising social tensions since the election of President Donald Trump.

The seven Muslim-majority countries targeted in President Trump's executive order on immigration were initially identified as "countries of concern" under the Obama administration.

In December 2015, President Obama signed into law a measure placing limited restrictions on certain travelers who had visited Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria on or after March 1, 2011. Two months later, the Obama administration added Libya, Somalia, and Yemen to the list, in what it called an effort to address "the growing threat from foreign terrorist fighters."

Just another hit story.... Everything is President Trumps' fault.

The shooter has been caught and charged with serious crimes!

"Adam Purinton, 51, was charged in Johnson County, Kansas, with one count of premeditated first degree murder and two counts of attempted premeditated first degree murder, Johnson County District Attorney Stephen Howe told a news conference"

Do you think his rhetoric and actions have helped ?

IMHO , it has done just the opposite.

It's funny. commonsense thinks that if a black lives matter person speaks up in a forceful way it will lead to violence against policeman. But he doesn't believe that Trump's rhetoric can lead to violence against other groups. That's very interesting.

By the way, the fact of the man's been arrested is in no way relevant to the discussion here. Even if you put it in boldface type, it's not relevant

Re: Hate Crime Is Feared as 2 Indian Engineers Are Shot in Kansas

261.

That's the number of hate incidentsThinkProgress has tracked since Nov. 9, 2016, when Donald Trump was declared president-elect. Of the 261 incidents, 109 — or 42% – "included specific references to Trump, his election, or his policies."

Now, the number does seem notably smaller than Southern Poverty Law Center's 867 reported post-election hate crime incidents. ThinkProgress' tracker only included acts of hate violence toward individuals and communities rather than public and private places — like vandalized mosques or spray-painted churches. The incidents listed in ThinkProgress' database also only included incidents that were backed up with news coverage, police reports or through the publication's own investigation into the incident.

According to the report, New York had the highest amount of hate incidents with 33 since Nov. 9. California followed with 27, Texas with 25 and Florida with 18 incidents. The report also found that 26.8% of the incidents targeted Jewish people, black people with 22.9%, LGBTQ people with 13.7%, Muslim people with 11.8%, Latinx with 10.3% and other with 14.9%. The reported incidents included acts of violence toward Trump supporters and protesters under "other."

It should be noted that while hate violence toward Muslims only accounted for 11.8% of the total incidents, Muslims are significantly the smallest population of all groups listed in the report.

You can find detailed reports of the hate incidents and the interactive database here. ThinkProgress will no longer be tracking hate violence, but ProPublica will be continuing the efforts. You can find their reports here.

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2017/02/13/hate-crimes-since-the-election-heres-whos-been-targeted-since/21712876/

While 11.8% of the hate crimes were directed against Muslims, they only account for about 1% of the US population.
