Ladies & gentlemen, place your bets

If you've got a couple extra bucks you'd like to plunk down on a bet that has much better odds than Powerball, here you go:

Bookmakers have slashed the odds of Donald Trump being impeached

The chances of Donald Trump being impeached or resigning without completing his first term as President have more than doubled since he was elected, according to one bookmaker.

When Mr Trump was named as President-elect in November, the odds of him not making it through the full four-year term were 3/1 with Ladbrokes.

Now, following a chaotic three weeks, the odds have shortened to just 11/10.

Jessica Bridge, a spokeswoman for Ladbrokes, said: "Trump says he'll get the job done, but the money suggests otherwise, and punters aren't entirely convinced the next four years will be plain sailing and he could be out of the White House via impeachment or resignation sooner rather than later."

Paddy Power has the odds of President Trump resigning at 15/8, with the chances of him being impeached in 2017 are 4/1.

Last week, two US legal experts said Mr Trump has already acted in violation of the US Constitution and should be impeached by Congress.

James C. Nelson, a former Montana Supreme Court judge, and John Bonifaz, the president of Free Speech for People, said the Republican has breached the very first article of the Constitution, which bans holders of public office from receiving financial benefits from foreign governments.

A number of overseas governments and state-owned companies use Mr Trump's businesses.

A senior Democrat has also suggested Mr Trump is “leading himself” towards impeachment.

Maxine Waters stated on Twitter that her “greatest desire” was to lead the President “right into impeachment,” citing the travel ban and Mr Trump’s rhetoric around Muslims as reasons that could eventually lead to his impeachment.

She told CNN that Mr Trump was creating “chaos and division”, adding “we have to find out more about him and some of that I think leads to the possibility of impeachment”.

It all depends on how much comes out.

As I said elsewhere they are NOT off to a good start.

No matter what, this whole thing with the Russians will "dog him" through his entire tenure however long or short that might be.

Re: Ladies & gentlemen, place your bets

3-1 or 4-1 odds?!

Total sucker bet.

First of all, the Democrats would need to win back the house to bring impeachment chargers.

Forgetting the fact for a second that I still don't see the Dems having a plan to win back a wide swath of voters outside of the coasts, the House districts are so gerrymandered that getting the house back in 2018 will be fairly difficult.

Assuming the Dems do take back the house, then you need to find 67 senators to vote to convict him of a high crime or misdemeanor. Will the Dems have the Senate majority in 2018? Yes. Will they get the 10-12 GOP senators needed to convict? You never can tell but I would guess not.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I would want 30-1 odds at a minimum before I would place a bet on Trump not making it through his first term.

The process of being impeached (not necessarily found guilty of the charge) just means a simple majority vote in the House. That simple majority vote is considered being impeached. The actual trial portion in the Senate (if it gets that far) does require a 2/3 majority vote. It IS possible that Trump could be impeached but either not found guilty or not get to the Senate. The first step of impeachment is the easiest to accomplish.

Re: Ladies & gentlemen, place your bets

Impeachment is very unlikely.
Either the democrats need to recapture the house, or a significant number of republicans have to cross over. In today's partisan political climate I find the latter unlikely.

Trump would have to do something so awful * that republicans would conclude that their fortunes necessitated pissing off the trump base and embracing Pence.

* not 'awful' in moral terms. Nobody in Washington cares about that. Awful in terms of how can I get re-elected if I don't get rid of this guy

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

You are correct Tenny. I was looking specifically at the Ladbrokes line of 3/1 for Trump not to serve the whole four year term.

Yeah, actually being found guilty of impeachment is HIGHLY UNLIKELY, but as in the past some choose to resign vs going through the messy and oft times embarrassing process. The later is the most likely reason Trump would leave office. But we are WAYY too early in this whole thing to know what might come out and just how his current supporters in Congress might react.
