Donald Trump eviscerated Washington in his inaugural address

Donald Trump eviscerated Washington in his inaugural address

http://circa.com/politics/donald-trumps-inaugural-speech-will-be-a-philosophical-document

Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States on Friday, and quickly put official Washington on notice that business as usual was about to busted.

Trump opened his speech by thanking his predecessor, Barack Obama, for his help during the transition of power.

"Today we are not merely transferring power from one administration to another, or from one party to another, but we are transferring power from Washington, D.C. and giving it back to you, the American people," he said in his inaugural address which lasted less than 20 minutes.

"For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government while the people have borne the cost," he argued. "Washington flourished - but the people did not share in its wealth,"

"Their triumphs have not been your triumphs; and while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land."

"We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world, but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put American interests will always come first."

“The wealth of the middle class has been ripped from their homes and redistributed across the world."

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”

That's interesting .......... the guy coming in with a 34% approval rating is telling me the guy leaving with a 60% approval rating is leaving behind the place in disarray and in shambles (carnage is the word he used, I think).

His inauguartion speech was a compilation of his campaign speeches.  Someone needs to tell him he doesn't have to campaign anymore.

His evisceration also pointed the finger at his OWN party who now holds majorities in both houses of Congress. He will need their support to get though a lot of his initiatives. We will see how that plays out. Perhaps not the smartest move right up front.

The address was a monument to jingoism and hubris.
Pray for our military

George Will did not like President Trump's inauguration speech

Twenty minutes into his presidency, Donald Trump, who is always claiming to have made, or to be about to make, astonishing history, had done so. Living down to expectations, he had delivered the most dreadful inaugural address in history.

Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s White House counselor, had promised that the speech would be “elegant.” This is not the adjective that came to mind as he described “American carnage.” That was a phrase the likes of which has never hitherto been spoken at an inauguration.

Oblivious to the moment and the setting, the always remarkable Trump proved that something dystopian can be strangely exhilarating: In what should have been a civic liturgy serving national unity and confidence, he vindicated his severest critics by serving up reheated campaign rhetoric about “rusted out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape” and an education system producing students “deprived of all knowledge.” Yes, all.

But cheer up, because the carnage will vanish if we “follow two simple rules: Buy American and hire American.” “Simple” is the right word.

Because in 1981 the inauguration ceremony for a cheerful man from the American West was moved from the Capitol’s East Portico to its West Front, Trump stood facing west, down the Mall with its stately monuments celebrating some of those who made America great — Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln. Looking out toward where the fields of the republic roll on, Trump, a Gatsby-for-our-time, said: “What truly matters is not which party controls our government but whether our government is controlled by the people.” Well.

“A dependence on the people,” James Madison wrote, “is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions.” He meant the checks and balances of our constitutional architecture. They are necessary because, as Madison anticipated and as the nation was reminded on Friday, “Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm.”

Re: Donald Trump eviscerated Washington in his inaugural address

Trump may have "eviscerated" some things in his inaugural address, but the main thing he "eviscerated" was factual information.

FACT CHECK: Trump starts on familiar note: with exaggeration

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Donald Trump's inaugural address held familiar echoes of the campaign speeches that led to his presidential win: downbeat about the state of the nation, to the point of hyperbole. A look at some of his assertions Friday:

___

TRUMP: "The jobs left, and the factories closed ... the wealth, strength and confidence of our country has disappeared over the horizon."

THE FACTS: The American economy is a lot healthier than the wreck Trump describes. Jobs have increased for a record 75 straight months. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in December, close to a nine-year low and to what economists consider full employment.

From July through September, the economy expanded at a 3.5 percent annual pace — fastest in two years. The Federal Reserve is so confident in the resiliency of the economy that it raised interest rates last month for only the second time in a decade.

Still, Trump's talk of "rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation" rings true in communities that lost factories to low-wage competition from China and Mexico. And the jobless rate is low partly because so many Americans have stopped looking for work and are no longer counted as unemployed.

Wage growth has been sluggish since the Great Recession ended in mid-2009. But declining unemployment and steady job growth are starting to force businesses to offer higher pay to find and attract new workers.

And in 2015, the income for a typical household jumped 5.2 percent to an inflation-adjusted $56,516, the largest annual growth in nearly five decades, according to the Census Bureau. Average hourly pay rose last year at the fastest pace in more than seven years.

___

TRUMP: "We've defended other nation's borders while refusing to defend our own."

THE FACTS: Hardly. Since 2001, the U.S. has more than doubled the ranks of the Border Patrol, which now has nearly 20,000 agents. The vast majority of those are stationed along the Mexican border, where about 408,000 people were apprehended during the budget year that ended in September.

___

TRUMP: The U.S. has "subsidized the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military."

THE FACTS: The U.S. military may have shortcomings, but it remains the world's most advanced, expensive and far-flung fighting force. American military spending is nearly three times that of second-place China, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

The Pentagon says it does have additional needs, including more ships, a replenished air fleet and bigger training budgets to prepare for large-scale combat.

___

TRUMP: "We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones, and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth."

THE FACTS: Quelling radical Islamic terrorism worldwide is a heavy lift in which the U.S. has been engaged for years, and Trump has offered no plan for how he will deliver on this promise.

A U.S.-led coalition began battling Islamic extremism even before 9/11. In Afghanistan alone, the coalition has fought for more than 15 years to prevent al-Qaida and other radical groups from regaining a safe harbor there. Getting the help of NATO allies might prove diplomatically challenging since Trump has called NATO "obsolete" and says European members aren't paying their fair share.

The threat is only growing. The Islamic State has a global reach, and attacks linked to radical extremism have occurred in the United States, France, Belgium, Turkey and countries throughout northern Africa.

Re: Donald Trump eviscerated Washington in his inaugural address

Trump also ignored his advisors who asked him to present a more unifying message.

I'm pretty sure this won't be the last time Trump ignores advice from others. I'd advise his advisors to get used to being ignored.

Armstrong Williams: Trump advisers backed a more unifying inaugural speech

January 20, 2017
Conservative commentator Armstrong Williams told Yahoo News on Friday that President Trump rejected suggestions to send a more unifying message with his inauguration speech.

“Even his closest advisers felt that more should’ve been in the speech about bringing America together, about the opportunities that are available in America, also [about] the kind of country that President Obama leaves us,” Williams said. “But Mr. Trump doesn’t necessarily share that sentiment.”

During the presidential race, Williams served as the business manager and informal spokesman for Ben Carson, who ran against Trump but ultimately rallied behind Trump’s White House bid. As president-elect, Trump named Carson his choice to lead the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

In his first official speech as president of the United States, Trump offered a bleak portrayal of the current state of the country declaring, “This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”

Williams argued that Trump’s words were not only reflective of personal views, but that his refusal to amend the speech to accommodate his advisers was indicative of the newly minted president’s appeal.

“While many people might write these remarks for him and ask him to say these things, the thing that people like about Trump is the fact that he’s authentic,” said Williams. “He’s not gonna say something he does not believe.”
