Just a Little Bit of History Repeating

They say the next big thing is here,
That the revolution's near,
But to me it seems quite clear,
That it's all just a little bit of history repeating
.

It is fair to observe that the planners of this war did not plan for its consequences. Scholars would argue for years about its origins. But the immediate goal was to remove a middle eastern dictator whom western powers had deemed a threat to civilization.

Rousing speeches were given, and a multinational army was assembled. The coalition army marched on an ancient city that was their primary objective. After a surprisingly short battle, the allied coalition took control.

Unfortunately, they made no realistic plans for what to do next. The coalition's leadership merely proclaimed mission accomplished, and many went home. Only a skeleton military presence was left to deal with what would become a formidable Muslim insurgency. Agreements were made with puppet states. Assurances were given. But the insurgency grew, fought, and eventually regained what was lost. The western powers reacted, sent more forces and created dangerous instability which led to years more bloodshed.

2003? No, 1099.
Baghdad? No Jerusalem .

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.
