This will Fool Them

The city of Biloxi, Mississippi found itself at the center of a twitter controversy after it announced city offices would be closed Monday for "Great Americans Day."Nowhere in it's announcement did the city mention Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Re: This will Fool Them

This went viral on Twitter last night. And of this morning, I believe the Mayor of Biloxi is asking the city council to formally change it to MLK Jr. Day.

I had never heard of "Great Americans Day" so I looked it up. Ironically, the concept of Great Americans Day was put forward by an ex-ESPN anchor primarily to create a national holiday so people could have the day after the Super Bowl off from work. It would also honor all sorts of "Great Americans" from Susan B. Anthony, to Elvis, to Muhammad Ali, to former presidents, MLK, and I guess anyone else we want to classify as a great American.

But at the end of the day, it was proposed as an excuse for people like myself not to have to worry about a post-Super Bowl hangover.

Which I approve of.
