It only took 6 days until we had our first mass shooting in the United States.
5 people were killed and 8 wounded at the Fort Lauderdale airport earlier this afternoon.

I've been glued to the tv for the past few hours and even though the authorities are still making sure the entire terminal and parking areas are clear it seems to be winding down with the suspect giving up immediately. The injured number has risen from eight to 13 last I heard. I hope all those people herded onto the tarmac and others moved further away from the terminal, and those sitting still on planes that landed hours ago are all soon freed to collect their baggage and move onward. It's been a horrible experience for everyone.

One of my wife's cousins and her family are at the Fort Lauderdale airport right now. They were in terminal 4 at the time of the shooting. They've been posting pictures on Facebook of SWAT teams running by them. They are safe, but scared.

Listening to Debbie Wasserman-Schultz on MSNBC. She's already talking about making baggage claim a "secure area" in airports and banning the allowing guns to be checked baggage.
The gun ban, I could take or leave. But turning the airport into a security zone when you are trying to get to the parking lot or a taxi will make air travel even suckier than it already is.

It will.
But, if you make an area secure, the next area out becomes a soft target with lots of people.
I think that they recently made the change in Belgium after that attack.
Yes, it sucks.

There WILL be better ways to handle checked guns. It WILL be less convenient for those that want to check guns, however. But safety is not always about convenience !

Another deranged man with a gun.
There will be a candlelight vigil.
Pain.
Thoughts and prayers.

Ft. Lauderdale shooting suspect made confused visit to FBI, said US intelligence forced him to watch ISIS videos
Estaban Santiago, the 26-year-old airline passenger accused of shooting up a baggage claim area at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood airport Friday, leaving five dead and eight injured, visited the FBI Anchorage field office and told officers he was being forced to watch ISIS videos, law enforcement sources told Fox News. The visit took place last November.
The sources said Santiago told agents that US intelligence had infiltrated his mind and were forcing him to watch ISIS propaganda videos."In November 2016, Esteban Santiago walked into the Anchorage FBI Field Office to report that his mind was being controlled by a U.S. intelligence agency,” a senior federal law enforcement official said.“During the interview, Santiago appeared agitated and incoherent, and made disjointed statements. Although Santiago stated that he did not wish to harm anyone, as a result of his erratic behavior, interviewing agents contacted local authorities who took custody of Santiago and transported him to a local medical facility for evaluation.
The FBI closed its assessment of Santiago after conducting database reviews, interagency checks, and interviews of his family members,” the official added.
