Ouch!

Increased state gas tax now in effect

HARRISBURG, Pa. —
It was already the highest in the country, but Pennsylvania’s gas tax is now 8 cents higher.

The increase went into effect on Jan. 1, 2017.

Drivers now pay about 78 cents per gallon in tax in Pa.

The state says the funds go to road construction and infrastructure maintenance.

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: Ouch!

Highest gas tax in the nation and the worst roads!

"The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) today approved a six percent toll increase for both E-ZPass and cash customers; the increase is set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 8, 2017."

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”

Re: Ouch!

Better get used to the toll increases.

Legislation was passed a couple of years ago mandating toll increases every January for the next 20 years or so.   The Turnpike Commission has no choice but to rubberstamp the rate hikes.    Some of the money is diverted to Philly-area mass transit.

As for the gas tax increase, I find it curious that the retailers didn't bump their prices up by 8 cents/gallon as the White Rose/Cigar/Pickle/Chicken or whatever was lowered.   There has been a 4 or 5 cent increase so far, coming on the heels of a similar increase last week.   Which tells me that there was some profit taking last week.    Maybe the better move would have been to keep prices steady last week, enact the full 8 cents on January 1, and place signs at the pumps and registers explaining that this increase is due to taxes:  "Upset--contact your lawmakers!"

Re: Ouch!

Rutter's wasted no time upping their prices a week ago.

Re: Ouch!

Profit taking last week to look like generous guys this week.

Who'd have thunk?

Re: Ouch!

We should all write, call, or e-mail our state legislators to thank them for giving us our money's worth.

Highest gas taxes, toll fees, driver's license fees, license plate fees, motor vehicle registration fees, all to provide us with some of the worst maintained roads and highway systems in the nation.

The motto of the Pennsylvania state legislature:

"Spending other people's money in a vain attempt to provide public services and give the impression that we are balancing the budget -- it's what we do. Please re-elect us . . . We deserve it."
