GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — A donor who wishes to remain anonymous dropped a $10,000 check into a Salvation Army kettle in western Pennsylvania.Vanessa Fullwood, the co-commander of the Greensburg Salvation Army, tells the Tribune-Review she found the check Thursday while emptying kettles from the day before.Everett Fullwood, Vanessa's husband and co-commander, says the check was donated outside the Westmoreland Mall.

The Fullwoods welcome the donation because this year's fundraising campaign has been struggling to meet the local chapter's $90,000 goal. The group has raised $75,000 and collects money in its red kettles through Christmas Eve.The money helps provide rent and utility assistance for needy families, and to staff the local chapter's office with five full-time and one part-time worker.

Re: Anonymous donor puts $10,000 check in Salvation Army kettle

Last I heard, the York Salvation Army was about $30,000.00 short of its 2015 red kettle collection.

An inside source told me that, today, Rutters' execs put at least three $1000.00 checks into kettles in the York area.   So that could erase 10% of their shortfall.

$1000.00???? What a bunch of cheapskates.  They way Rutters stiffs people on their gas prices I'd think they would be donating multiple thousands and not just one.

I wonder if because more and more people are shopping online it the decline in visiting the big box stores is part of the reason ??

I can think of at least four factors:

1)  Last year we had record-setting warmth in December and very little precip.
2)  Fewer people going to malls because of the convenience of on-line shopping.
3)  People who do go to the malls are paying with plastic, not cash; and carrying very little cash.
4)  Some people are afraid of what will happen--especially with health care costs--with the new administration.

I'm in your #3 although I don't go to malls because I buy very few gifts any more.  One super fantastic g-granddaughter is the exception.

I'm in # 2; no fighting traffic, searching for parking, dealing with indifferent sales clerks, long lines, etc.

Once in a while the "spinning beachball" (internet equivalant of a checkout line) but otherwise hassle free.

But on the rare occasion when I visit a store with a red kettle I do put something in it.
