Carl Paladino opens big mouth, inserts big foot

There's gotta be room for this millionaire Trump backer somewhere in the president elect's cabinet:

On Paladino's 'wish list' for 2017: Obama dead of mad cow disease

Dave DeLuca

When Artvoice asked Buffalo developer and School Board member Carl Paladino what he wanted to see happen in 2017, he didn't filter his responses — and the controversial, crude answers are causing a firestorm.

In the alternative weekly newspaper's survey, which asked 42 locals for their 2017 wish lists, Paladino said he would like President Barack Obama to die of mad cow disease and for First Lady Michelle Obama to live with an ape in an African cave.

Paladino's comments below:

Artvoice: What would you most like to happen in 2017?

Carl Paladino: Obama catches mad cow disease after being caught having relations with a Herford. He dies before his trial and is buried in a cow pasture next to Valerie Jarret, who died weeks prior, after being convicted of sedition and treason, when a Jihady cell mate mistook her for being a nice person and decapitated her.

Artvoice: What would you most like to see go in 2017?

Carl Paladino: Michelle Obama. I’d like her to return to being a male and let loose in the outback of Zimbabwe where she lives comfortably in a cave with Maxie, the gorilla.

Paladino verified to The Buffalo News that he did make the comments, while at the same time slamming News editors for inquiring.

"Of course I did," he said Friday morning. "Tell them all to go f--- themselves."

"Tell that Rod Watson I made that comment  just for him," he continued, referencing one of the News' black editors who is also a columnist.

Paladino said he made the statements because of what he considered Obama's ineffective response to the crisis in Aleppo. He called Obama the worst president in the history of the United States and criticized him for "putting criminals back on the streets."

"Yeah, I'm not politically correct," he said. "They asked what I want and I told them."

Paladino released the following statement to the media at 1 p.m. Friday defending his remarks:

Some community members took offense to Paladino's statements, calling him racist and renewing a push for him to step down from the Buffalo School Board.

Dr. Barbara Nevergold, president of the Buffalo School Board, told reporters Friday that she supported the right for people to call for Paladino's ouster from the board.

"If a student had written this kind of information ... in social media ... they would be suspended," Nevergold said.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo blasted Paladino's remarks in a statement released Friday afternoon, saying Paladino "has a long history of racist and incendiary comments."

Cuomo wrote: "While most New Yorkers know Mr. Paladino is not to be taken seriously, as his erratic behavior defies any rational analysis and he has no credibility, his words are still jarring. His remarks do not reflect the sentiments or opinions of any real New Yorker and he has embarrassed the good people of the state with his latest hate-filled rage."

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz called on Paladino to immediately resign from the School Board.

"While the First Amendment of our Constitution protects the right of free speech, no matter how deplorable it may be, there can be no room in our civil discourse for such hate and anger,” Poloncarz said. “These comments harken back to the darkest days of racism in our nation’s history. Anyone who has these beliefs is unfit to hold public office and especially unfit to oversee the education of children.

Social media networks exploded Friday morning with criticism lodged at the longtime developer, who has significant influence in Western New York politics.

"I think it's shocking and distressing that someone who plays such a vital role in the education of our young people in the city, in a district that has such a large minority population, that he would say something so blatantly racist in print," said Shira Klaiman, a Williamsville parent, who contacted the News after reading Paladino's comments.

"What I don't want is for this to become normal," she added. "That can happen if we don't stand up and say 'No, this isn't OK.' "

The Artvoice comments are just the latest in a long history of Paladino making offensive statements, some of which caught national attention because of his role as a co-chairman in President-elect Donald J. Trump's New York State election campaign.

During the campaign, Paladino appeared on National Public Radio and described supporters of Trump as people frustrated with government who “want the raccoons out of the basement.” He described what’s happening in the presidential race as “a political revolution” involving getting rid of “the establishment class” within the Republican Party and ridding Washington, D.C., of “the Washington elite monsters.”

In June 2015, Paladino commented during a political rally in Olean about “damn Asians” and other “foreigners” attending the University at Buffalo.

Paladino also defended a then-Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority commissioner who used a racial epithet to describe several African-American politicians, including Mayor Byron W. Brown.

And his run for governor in 2010, Paladino received national attention for circulating what some considered as racist and sexist emails.

Earlier this week, Paladino was also criticized for introducing a resolution to mandate all Buffalo Public Schools display a picture of Donald J. Trump.

What an asshole

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Just like all the other screwballs who get elected to something--we, the people, vote them into office without ever caring enough to know their history.
