US abstains in key Israel vote

US abstains in key Israel vote
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2016/12/23/us-abstains-in-key-israel-vote-clearing-way-for-condemnation-settlements.html

A "shameful" abstention by the U.S. in a United Nations vote Friday allowed passage of a resolution condemning Israeli settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. The UN Security Council resolution was put forward by four nations a day after Egypt withdrew it Thursday under pressure from Israel and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Failure by the U.S. to veto the measure was seen as a double-cross of America's key Middle Eastern ally, and attributed directly to outgoing President Barack Obama, who has had chilly relations with Israel throughout his eight-year tenure.Reaction from U.S. Republicans and Jewish leaders around the world was swift and sharp."It was to be expected that Israel's greatest ally would act in accordance with the values that we share and that they would have vetoed this disgraceful resolution," said Israel's Ambassador Danny Danon. "I have no doubt that the new U.S. administration and the incoming UN Secretary General will usher in a new era in terms of the UN's relationship with Israel."

Statement on Anti-Israel UN ResolutionDecember 22, 2016|Speaker Paul Ryan

WASHINGTON—House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement on the upcoming UN Security Council vote on an anti-Israel resolution:“These stunts at the UN serve only one purpose—to defame and delegitimize the democratic State of Israel. This resolution will undermine peace and mutual cooperation by pushing the parties further away from direct negotiations. The administration should veto it.”

Extremely frustrating, disappointing & confounding that the Administration has failed to veto the UN resolution.

In general people don't really understand this delicate issue mainly because they don't want to take the time to see what is behind all of this.

Re: US abstains in key Israel vote

Let's see now . . . how many members of the UN Security Council are there?

The Council is composed of 15 Members:

five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States,
and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly (with end of term date):

Angola (2016)
Egypt (2017)
Japan (2017)
Malaysia (2016)
New Zealand (2016)
Senegal (2017)
Spain (2016)
Ukraine (2017)
Uruguay (2017)
Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) (2016)

So, the U.S. didn't veto a motion that other members thought was fair, and we are somehow the ogre? Well, according to Fox 'news' and pro-Israel lobbyists anyhow.

Israel's insistence on displacing more Palestinians from their ancestral homes and building more Israeli settlers home have been fuel on the fire in an already incendiary situation in the Mideast for decades. It is time to halt this untenable on-going action to prevent further violence in the area. It is time for Israel and the world to understand the need for reconciliation and cooperation with all the people of the Mideast.

Re: US abstains in key Israel vote

What was "shameful " about the abstention?

We live in a time in which decent and otherwise sensible people are surrendering too easily to the hectoring of morons or extremists.

Re: US abstains in key Israel vote

Bottom line, our support for Israel should NOT include supporting everything that they do.
A friend tells you when you are doing something wrong.

Re: US abstains in key Israel vote

I am still waiting to hear what was "shameful" about the Obama administration's actions.
Past US Presidents, Reagan, Carter, GHW Bush, Clinton, and GWB have all voiced opposition to Israel building new settlements in the occupied territories.

Re: US abstains in key Israel vote

Back in September, the United States committed $38 billion dollars of military aid to Israel.

The aid package “is just the most recent reflection of my steadfast commitment to the security of the state of Israel,”  President Obama =14px said in a statement.

I think you're going to see a lot of different United States of America over the next three, four, or eight years. - President Donald J. Trump

Maybe we ought to let Israel do their own funding !

That $38 Billion could do a LOT of good back home.
