Just a good Christmas story about good people doing good deeds for others in need.
York man delivers Christmas Smile for 14th year
Christmas Eve is Jeff Crouse’s favorite day of the year — not just because he gets to see family and friends, but because he gets to volunteer his time and donate items to needy families in the area.“This is my favorite day in the whole year because it means something,” Crouse said. “It’s not just Christmas; it's sharing with everyone else in York city.”
For the last 14 years, Crouse has organized A Christmas Smile, a holiday event open to the public that features a full buffet, live music and gifts for children. In addition, people in need are also given a gift bag with items ranging from blankets and socks to personal hygiene items and gift cards.Crouse is aided by about 70 others, who help decorate, deliver donations and cook for the event.“When the day is done, everyone walks out of there feeling like they’ve done something,” Crouse said.
“That’s why I keep on doing it. It just makes everyone feel better.""I was raised to take care of people less fortunate than myself," he added. "This is what I do to give back.”The event goes beyond helping the homeless and needy. It also provides a place for others to spend Christmas Eve and spread Christmas cheer. Crouse said that over the years, widows and widowers not with family during the holidays used the event to avoid spending the holiday alone.
“Everyone is together and we’re all having fun,” Crouse said. “It’s a party for York.”
