Two dead in I-95 crashes; 15-car pileup closes beltway in freezing rain

Two people died in a pair of crashes on Interstate 95 in the freezing rain Saturday morning, and a 15-car pileup on the Baltimore beltway at Route 702 closed the inner loop for hours, authorities said.Police did not identify the people killed.

Few details were available about the crashes, which were among more than a dozen around the area as freezing rain accumulated on roads. One of the two fatal crashes happened on I-95 northbound near Eastern Avenue; the other happened in the southbound lanes when a car and a tanker collided about 5 a.m., according to the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.Nine patients were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center from one of the crashes, hospital officials said. Their conditions were not known. The 15-car beltway crash happened just minutes later, police said.

No serious injuries were reported. The cause of both crashes is under investigation. The inner loop of the beltway remained closed for hours, and police did not know when it might reopen. The Maryland Transit Administration shut down the Light Rail due to the weather conditions.Freezing rain began falling in the Baltimore region between 3 and 5 a.m., the National Weather Service said. Accumulation on roads was between 0.1 and 0.2 inches by 8 a.m. With temperatures hovering several degrees below freezing, a steady freezing rain was expected to continue until about noon or 1 p.m.

I always wonder why vehicles are out on the streets and highways following ample notice of impending weather. This bad weather was predicted for the entire east coast so why attempt to drive in it?

Amen to that! Especially 95... It's bad on the best weather day.
