U.S. Demands Return of Drone Seized by Chinese Warship
By HELENE COOPER DEC. 16, 2016
WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on Friday demanded the return of an underwater drone that was seized by China as an American crew was moving in to retrieve it. The episode threatens to increase tensions in a region already fraught with great-power rivalries.
A Chinese warship had been shadowing the Bowditch, a United States naval vessel, in the international waters of the South China Sea when the Chinese launched a small boat and snatched the unmanned underwater vehicle, the Pentagon said.
Ignoring radio demands from the Americans to return the drone, the Chinese ship sailed off.
The episode set off one of the tensest standoffs between Beijing and Washington in 15 years and occurred a day after the Chinese signaled that they had installed weapons along a string of disputed islands in the South China Sea.
The seizure of the drone brought a formal protest from the United States at a time when China is extending claims over the South China Sea and is watching the United States — and its incoming president — with wariness.

Trump slams China's seizure of U.S. drone in tweet
By POLITICO STAFF 12/17/16 08:20 AM EST
Donald Trump responded to China’s seizure of an unmanned U.N. Navy vehicle on Saturday, calling it an “unpresidented act” in an apparent typo.
“China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters - rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented act,” the president-elect tweeted Saturday morning.
Trump’s tweet comes as the U.S. and Chinese militaries hold discussions over the underwater drone, which was seized on Thursday off the coast of the Philippines.
Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook on Friday demanded that China return the unmanned underwater vehicle or UUV, which he said was “a sovereign immune vessel of the United States.”
“We call upon China to return our UUV immediately and to comply with all of its obligations under international law," Cook said.
Cook described the drone as “an unclassified ‘ocean glider’ system used around the world to gather military oceanographic data such as salinity, water temperature, and sound speed,” which he said was in the middle of carrying out “routine operations in accordance with international law” when it was seized by a Chinese navy ship.
"It is understood that China and the United States are using military channels to appropriately handle this issue,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry told Reuters on Saturday.
"It is ours, and it is clearly marked as ours and we would like it back. And we would like this not to happen again," Pentagon spokesman Jeff Davis said.
China has claimed the South China Sea, off the coast of the Philippines, as its territorial waters, but the United States and its allies have pushed back against the Chinese claim.

Donald, prepare to be tested by the various thugs in the world.
For the sake of us all, I sincerely wish you luck.
After you are sworn in,,,,I would beg you to please not conduct foreign policy by Tweets.
If you insist on doing so, for F#*K's sake please get someone at the State Department to proof-read and spell check them. It could keep us all from looking like idiots on the world stage.

Grow up, and knock it off.
Your personal hatred of me has derailed way too many threads.
It's like you are obsessed with preventing discussion from occurring.
Now, please,,,,,,
comment on the topic of a thread, if it interests you.
If it does not, an adult and leave the thread alone.
Do you think that tweeting about foreign affairs is a great idea for the new president, a bad idea, or of no consequence? Focus.

Trump: US should let China keep seized drone
President-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to say that the United States should let China keep the U.S. Navy's unmanned underwater glider that it seized in the South China Sea.
"We should tell China that we don't want the drone they stole back.- let them keep it!" Trump tweeted shortly after the U.S. military announced an understanding had been reached with China for the Navy glider’s return.
