Trump picks charter school advocate Betsy DeVos for education secretary
President-elect Donald Trump selected a charter school advocate and GOP donor from Michigan on Wednesday to be education secretary.Betsy DeVos becomes the second woman chosen to fill a spot in Trump's Cabinet. Earlier Wednesday, Trump named South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations earlier in the day.
Both Cabinet-level positions require Senate confirmation. While some initially cheered Haley's selection, despite her limited experience on the international stage, the DeVos choice faced criticism even before it was formally announced Wednesday. Conservatives warned that DeVos, a longtime Republican donor, previously supported the Common Core education standards that Trump railed against during the campaign.Trump, who was at his Palm Beach estate Wednesday for the Thanksgiving holiday, called DeVos "a brilliant and passionate education advocate."DeVos, from Michigan, is a longtime advocate for charter schools and school vouchers.
She currently leads the advocacy group, American Federation for Children, and sits on the board of the Jeb Bush-led Foundation for Excellence in Education.

From E-Mail Scott Wagner:Good Afternoon:
Two years ago I joined the Republican Governor’s Association (RGA) – I have attended many of the quarterly meetings since I joined the RGA.
I attended an RGA event last week in Orlando – the event was kicked off with dinner on Monday evening and our speaker was Vice President-Elect Mike Pence, the Governor of Indiana. I met Governor Pence in October of 2015 at an RGA meeting in Detroit. Governor Pence has an impressive record of improving Indiana.
Governor Pence gave the audience an update on the transition process currently under way by the Trump Administration. He emphasized that the selection process for the various cabinet positions is going well and that the best people are being considered.
First and foremost, Governor Pence stated that the first 100 days of the Trump Administration will be full of major initiatives that need action.
The following day there were several panel discussions. The event was attended by 22 current Republican Governors and seven Republican Governors-Elect.
The panel discussion that was the most educational for me was – “Opportunities for American Children." In today’s global economy, students are competing with their peers from around the world. In order to better equip American students for success, Republican Governors are implementing impactful education system reforms, instead of continuing the status quo in their school systems. Through the expansion of school choice, changes in school funding mechanisms, new methods of teacher accountability, and other school-centered reforms, Republican Governors are ensuring that all students have the tools necessary to receive a high quality education.
There were three Governors who participated on the education discussion panel along with two other highly knowledgeable experts on education. One of the panel participants was Betsy DeVos – who is the Chairman of the American Federation for Children.
After the panel discussion Betsy joined our table for lunch. Very simply put, Betsy DeVos is one sharp woman. She is exceptionally knowledgeable on public school education and she is full of cutting edge ideas. We exchanged business cards and I intended to follow up with Betsy to discuss ideas for Pennsylvania’s public schools.
Here is the breaking news - - - - - - Donald Trump selected Betsy DeVos for the position of Education Secretary today.

Selecting Betsy DeVos as Education Secretary is a very big deal for America's public schools.
Contrary to what the press is reporting, Donald Trump is selecting top notch people to cabinet positions.
Governor Pence’s comments at the dinner were right on target when he stated that the first 100 days of the Trump Administration will be critical. The various appointments made this week are showing that Donald Trump is taking quick action.
Have a great Thanksgiving holiday.
Thank You,
Scott Wagner

She looks like she might be a reasonable choice. She is an advocate of school choice which in general terms I agree with, but do not think that necessarily that leads to Charter Schools, but rather a broad and assorted set of alternatives. She has supported Common Core in the past which is in line again with what I believe whether it be across public or private education.
