Apple could make iPhones in US in future: sources

If something like this could happen... I wonder how many jobs that would bring with the potential move?

TAIPEI -- iPhones might one day soon carry "Made in America" labels.Key Apple assembler Hon Hai Precision Industry, also known as Foxconn Technology Group, has been studying the possibility of moving iPhone production to the U.S., sources told the Nikkei Asian Review.  "Apple asked both Foxconn and Pegatron, the two iPhone assemblers, in June to look into making iPhones in the U.S.," a source said. "Foxconn complied, while Pegatron declined to formulate such a plan due to cost concerns."Foxconn, based in the gritty, industrial Tucheng district in suburban Taipei, and its smaller Taiwanese rival churn out more than 200 million iPhones annually from their massive Chinese campuses.

Another source said that while Foxconn had been working on the request from Apple Inc., its biggest customer that accounts for more than 50% of its sales, Chairman Terry Gou had been less enthusiastic due to an inevitable rise in production costs."Making iPhones in the U.S. means the cost will more than double," the source said. The person added that one view among the Apple supply chain in Taiwan is that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump may push the Cupertino, California-based tech titan to make a certain number of iPhone components at home.

According to research company IHS Markit, it costs about $225 for Apple to make an iPhone 7 with a 32GB memory, while the unsubsidized price for such a handset is $649.Apple, Foxconn and Pegatron all declined to comment.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,”  former vice president Biden said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by — you know, you know, the thing.”

I could see certain components being made in the U.S. (like the glass screens, for example) but I just don't see the whole iPhone being built here.

Maybe, but here is an article from 2014 that looked at that possibility.

How much would an all-American iPhone cost?

From my perspective, just about anything that is made in Taiwan, China, Japan, Mexico, or wherever can be produced and assembled in the U.S. If there is a market for the product, corporate management has the foresight and fortitude to establish reasonable sales and operations planning along with an efficient supply chain structure, plus management and labor must be willing to accept jobs with reasonable salaries and benefit packages to keep costs in line with the market demand.

All of this takes long range planning, which is something U.S. businesses have forgotten how to design and implement. As long as the primary consideration of U.S. business leaders is short term results, those industries, jobs, and revenues will continue to migrate overseas.

If I am reading you right, what you are saying is, with proper planning, Apple could easily take a slimmer profit margin on the iPhone if they made it in the USA.

The question is will stakeholders in the company accept it?

I'm saying that if you make a quality product that serves a need and offer it to the market at a reasonable price, your product and your company will succeed. If your company's only interest is in making the privileged few a lot of money, then you'll probably adopt a short term mentality as far as management's direction. Investors/shareholders/stakeholders in a company will be of the same ilk. . . They'll either invest their money for a quick turnover short term profit, or look for consistent long term results. Their inducements/actions in regards to your company are secondary. The primary concern of most entrepreneurs is successfully developing a product close to their heart and marketing it to the public. Unlike secondary 'stakeholders', true entrepreneurs are not afraid of setbacks or downturns.
